Detainee coerced into dropping charges of abuse before release

RAW STORY

The following embargo has been broken by some outlets in other countries; as such RAW STORY is releasing this release sent today from the American Civil Liberties Union. The documents related to this abuse will be available within the next few hours on their website.

It should be noted that the abuse reported here came after the scandal at Abu Ghraib. The documents are set to splash on the front pages of major newspapers around the United States on Friday.

All told, the documents number more than a thousand pages.

U.S. Soldiers Posed in Photos of Mock Executions of Detainees; More Cases of Abuse Revealed in Newly Released Documents

EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE
February 18, 2005, 12:01 AM

NEW YORK–The American Civil Liberties Union today released files obtained from the Army revealing previously undisclosed allegations of abuse by U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among the documents are reports that a detainee who was beaten and seriously injured was forced to drop his claims in order to be released from custody.

“The torture of detainees is too widespread and systemic to be dismissed as the rogue actions of a few misguided individuals,” said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. “The American public deserves to know which high-level government officials are ultimately responsible for the torture conducted in our name.”

The release of these documents follows a federal court order that directed the Defense Department and other government agencies to comply with a year-old request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filed by the ACLU, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Physicians for Human Rights, Veterans for Common Sense and Veterans for Peace. The New York Civil Liberties Union is co-counsel in the case.... more here: http://rawstory.com/news/2005/index.php?p=95

FYI
The documents will be posted when the embargo is lifted.

9. I'm not sure I could even stomach seeing the documents
after reading only the article. Although I can't say I'm surprised, I am disgusted and angry, and sick at heart. Whenever I think I can't possibly hate this administration more than I already do, I learn I was mistaken. How many more people will be killed, maimed, tortured, ruined, by this "christian" administration before they are stopped?

4. Documents can be made available to admins, mods
If need be; this will be LBN in the New York Times, the WaPo, etc. but they're restricted on embargo until 12:01 am ET. If any admins/mods for LBN want to see the documents to prove the story, please PM me.

Unforunately, we aren't, however, allowed to release the documents to the general public, but will post a link to the document page from raw story at midnight.

The reason the ACLU wanted to have an embargo was because there were so many pages and they wanted to give every paper and equal chance at writing a kick-ass story.

I would hope he could retract the disclaimer...after all it must have been an act force, under duress. Off the subject since I can't post yet.. anyone remember the story several months ago about the pending court martial or possible court-martial of the young American soldier who broke down and freaked out at the sight of a wounded Iraqi? Did they ever punish that poor kid? The story got dropped in light of the prison abuse scandal.

11. This is real...
This happened AFTER ABU GRABI(Sp).

This could be bad enough to get Bush into some serious trouble. At a minimum, I would home Rumsfield would be history.

Target 1 -- Glenn Beck. He was pissed as hell about Abu Grabi, and I think he will have a hard time defending the administration on this.

13. America
America, the torturers
Torture is what we do
Spreading "Freedom and Democracy"
so we can bomb them, too.

America! America!
We kill and rape with glee
as we let off steam, the American dream
From sea to shining sea!
