Government sues Wal-Mart in Bradenton sexual harassment case

BRADENTON, Fla. - The federal government filed suit Thursday against Wal-Mart Stores Inc., saying it failed to stop an assistant manager from sexually harassing a female employee.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Wal-Mart officials did not do anything to stop the harassment when they learned of it. It is the second lawsuit filed by the federal agency against the mammoth retailer based on sexual harassment allegations from the same store in Bradenton, just south of the Tampa Bay area.

A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday.

The EEOC said a woman was hired at the Bradenton Supercenter in January 2002 to work in the stock room. Shortly after she began work, an assistant manager began sexually propositioning her, subjecting her to vulgar language and touching her, the EEOC said in a news release Thursday.
