Iran and Syria confront US with defence pact
Iran and Syria heightened tension across the Middle East and directly confronted the Bush administration yesterday by declaring they had formed a mutual self-defence pact to confront the "threats" now facing them.
The move, which took the Foreign Office by surprise, was announced after a meeting in Tehran between the Iranian vice-president, Mohammed Reza Aref, and the Syrian prime minister, Naji al-Otari.

"At this sensitive point, the two countries require a united front due to numerous challenges," said Mr Otari.

Regarded as rogue states by the White House, Iran is under pressure over its nuclear ambitions, while Syria came under renewed scrutiny over the assassination this week of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

This administration is scaring the hell out of other countries who are of little threat to us, which is the reason they want nukes. Shrub's policy is causing nuclear proliferation.

13. This will get ugly.
Both Syria and Iran have much more "war toys" shit than Iraq. Syria has a large array of chemical munitions. Iran has some serious shit and an air force as well.

10. That would be a 3 front war
Don't forget that Iran shares a border with Afghanistan, too. Last I heard, Gulbuddin Hekmatayer was still alive and kicking.

8. Depends on what you mean by "peacemaker"
"Is there no end to the irrational prejudice against Red Ryder and his peacemaker?"

I'm sure the Neocons consider our nucular arsenal to be a peacemaker, too...

11. Whether or not Europe is for the US will depend on
How it estimates its' future requirements for ME crude. The EU will be better off with a strong alliance with the ME, the US is fast becoming second rate and therefore expendable. As far as the Syria-Iran defense treaty, we can expect other Arab nations to join that soon. I would suspect that Israel is in grave danger.

12. Don't think that the neo-cons expected this
The problem is that the neo-cons might welcome a war against Syria and Iran at the same time. To their way of thinking it would be a double play.
