Strong quake rocks Tokyo
TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has jolted Tokyo and nearby areas, injuring several people, but there are no reports of major damage.

The quake, with its epicentre 50 miles below the surface in the Pacific Ocean east of Tokyo, occurred at 12.55 p.m. (4:55 a.m. British time on Saturday), the Meteorological Agency said.

No tsunami warning was issued, but fire officials quoted by Kyodo news agency said seven people were slightly injured when part of a temple wall collapsed in central Tokyo.

The tremor did not seriously affect transport.

Japan sits atop the junction of at least three tectonic plates, immense slabs of the earth's crust whose gradual movements are thought to cause earthquakes, making it one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions.

1. This is the only negative I'd have
with living in Tokyo or Japan.

Otherwise I'd LOVE to see what the place is like.

3. Friendly people...excellent service...clean...and on time!!
The Ginza district in Tokyo makes Times Square look miniscule.

If you have the chance...it is soooo worth the trip.

5. Someone was predicting a major quake there earlier this week
I don't have a link for this, but my son mentioned it to me -- it was on the basis of electrical stresses in the rocks or something of that sort.

I wonder if the predicter will decide he was half-right or totally wrong?

Japan also has Typhoon Choi-Wan bearing down on it -- it's supposed to reach category 2 tomorrow and rake along the eastern coast. Sounds like a real fun week.
