As much as a third of this group is thought to move in and out of Iraq with some frequency, the officers said. Many have eluded U.S. and Iraqi forces by a combination of moving constantly, avoiding use of telephones and receiving protection from family or tribal connections.

"Are we having success rolling up some of the top-tier leaders? Not at this time," said Brig. Gen. John DeFreitas, the highest-ranking Army intelligence officer in Iraq. "But we're successfully working the second- and third-tier leaders to put pressure on the top tier."

<snip>

U.S. officers classify nearly half of the insurgency's leaders as "former regime members" -- people who were operatives of the ruling Baath Party, aides to deposed president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) or officers in his military and security services. Another eight are described as associates of Abu Musab Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born insurgent leader. Most of the rest are characterized as foreign terrorists.

More recently, Lt. Gen. John Vines, commander of the 18th Airborne Corps who took over last week as the senior U.S. operational commander in Iraq, has ordered a more focused approach to tracking high-priority insurgents. He calls it the "unblinking eye."

2. I don't think it has been a secret...
at least to the rest of the world anyway. The world KNOWS the US flattened and killed thousands of people in Fallujah. The TV viewing ameriKans think the US used precision guided weapons and only killed "insurgents" with those 500 - 2000lb bombs. :eyes:

6. No shit, you're exactly right. But that's just it
These guys are just going to get more orclike
by the day. Power increasingly monopolized at the top.
Slaves at the bottom. And if you don't do what we say,
we'll make life worse for you. Boredom will be your
holiday.

Soon, we won't have to guess who the BadGuys are.
They won't be able to conceal their evil.

You can't make this up.

US forces evacuate ‘Ayn al-Asad base in Hit following heavy Resistance rocket barrages.

During the first hours of dawn Monday US forces
began evacuating the ‘Ayn al-Asad airbase in Hit, western
Iraq, Mafkarat al-Islam reported. The correspondent of
Mafkarat al-Islam witnessed the withdrawal of more than 300
US tanks, armored vehicles, earth moving machines, and
other pieces of construction equipment such as cranes
and bulldozers under heavy cover of US fighter aircraft,
which flew over the area at an unprecedentedly low altitude.
The correspondent added that Apache, Cobra, and Black
Hawk helicopters hovered over the column that clogged
the international
highway.

Hit is just outside of Ar Ramadi, a city of 500k which
the US evac'd several days ago.

"US fighter aircraft, which flew over the area at
an unprecedentedly low altitude." - another indication the IR
have received high-altitude capable SAMs.

Resistance shoots down US Black Hawk helicopter.
American troops surround village, demand children
“terrorists” be handed over to
them.

The Shaykh of a nearby mosque expressed his anger over
the fact that local village youths dragged the bodies of
the crewmen and threw them to the dogs that guard the
village. The Shaykh said that such behavior violated
the teachings of Islamic law. A local citizen told
the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam, however, that the
act was a natural reaction by a boy whose father had been
killed before his eyes by occupation
troops.

In his dispatch posted at 5:35pm Monday afternoon Mecca
time, the correspondent wrote that US forces were still
encircling the village and demanding that local
townspeople hand over the children who abused the bodies
of the Americans, calling them
“terrorists.”
