Thousands protest at defence talks (Rumsfeld in Germany)
From correspondents in Munich, Germany
13feb05

NINETEEN people were arrested in Munich today as about 3500 gathered to demonstrate against an international security conference attended by US Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld.

Most of the people arrested were carrying weapons and had covered their faces with scarves, a police spokesman said.
The organisers of the demonstrations had said 5000 people would take part in the protests.

About 4000 police, almost 1000 more than last year, are guarding the three-day meeting of defence ministers and top-level experts at an exclusive hotel in the centre of the southern German city. <snip>
