Group wants to amend Florida Constitution to ban gay marriage
TALLAHASSEE - A group with ties to conservative Christians has launched a citizen petition to ban gay marriage in Florida.

The measure seeks to amend the state Constitution in 2006 to define marriage as a union between "only one man and one woman" and provides that no other kind of marriage or legal union is equivalent to marriage. It was filed Wednesday with the state elections division.

The measure, if approved, would have little immediate impact in Florida. State law does not recognize same-sex marriage. But it would remove from the Legislature the power to change that. It also could have political implications on the 2006 governor's race, drawing conservatives to the polls.

Sponsors of the measure deferred questions until a news conference planned for Monday in Orlando.

Their website, florida4marriage.org won't be up until Monday at 11:30 am...Valentine's Day. I wish that they wouldn't call groups like this, "Christian" because there's nothing Christian about them...

1. I consider them very Christian
"""I wish that they wouldn't call groups like this, "Christian" because there's nothing Christian about them..."""

From what I've seen of the Christians the last few decades.....the only news they make is bad news. I keep waiting for stories like, "US Churches' Massive Wealth Used To End Poverty!" or "Hunger Ended In US Thanks To Religion!" but its usually some hateful crap against gays, atheists, women, other religions, etc.

Our civil rights are under assault, the world is teetering on the brink of ecological disaster, our country's finances are being wrecked to fight holy crusades in the middle east, and the people running the show have told us they are on a mission from God™. I've reached the point in my own mind where I can't even stomach the sight of a church because to me it is such a symbol of injustice. I guess I'm just fresh out of Christian love and forgiveness when it comes to the church. I hope you can forgive me for blaming all Christians just like I blame all repukes for this mess. Maybe when the top recruiting ground for republicans voters isn't a church parking lot I'll feel differently.

5. I hear ya.
Didn't see your post before I posted mine below.

Personally, I'm extremely uncomfortable with the entire subject.

It's hard to target these stridently regressive radical 'Christian' groups that have insinuated themselves into the political arena without the appearance of attacking Christianity as a whole.

"With God on their side" they're running rampant in "one nation under God" - hand in hand with corporations, the warmongers, the hypocrites, and the 'powers that be'.

As I said below, they literally scare the daylights out of me. How to fight back without being called 'a Godless evil force bashing all who believe' is what I see as one of the major issues here.

Very frightening times we live in, Yuugal.

13. There are is at least TWO Jewish anti-gay groups.
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 06:23 PM by IanDB1
"Zvhiller Beis Medrash" and "Toward Tradition" are the only anti-gay Jewish organizations that I know of.

These two groups are very small and of little consequence.

85% of Jews are in favor of gay marriage.

The other 15% think it was cool to cheer as the Nazis took the homosexuals to the concentration camps, because they figured it would never be THEIR turn.

Those 15% are mostly the ultra-orthodox who (thankfully) have a tradition of not meddling in the affairs of our secular government.

The ultra-orthodox and Chasidic are almost all strictly in favor of the wall between church (or synagogue) and state. They seem to condemn homosexuals within their own congregations, particularly in the Chasidic community, but are content to let the rest of the world deal with the issue as we see fit.

I guess The Holocaust taught them to "keep their heads down," but hasn't taught them the idea of tolerating others. It's a shame.

Toward Tradition's goal is to "unite evangelical and fundamentalist Christians with traditionalist Jews."

Interestingly, "Toward Tradition" is not only anti-gay, but.. oh, you'll love this... THEY ARE AGAINST RECYCLING!

He calls recycling "The sacred sacrament of secularism." "Why? Because if we are animals then there is a shortage in the world. God doesn't take anything from us and God doesn't create and therefore there is a shortage ...

Beis Medrash is a Chasidic Kabbalah group. I'll avoid using the word "cult," because I'm not sure if it is one. Kabbalah is "Jewish Mysticism," like the belief that if Madonna wears a red bracelet while she sings "Vogue," it will ward off the "evil eye."

Yes, Madonna is a follower of Kabbalah. So is Paris Hilton.

Oh, and "Angelina Jolie has apparently given Brad Pitt the ashes of a bat to protect him from accidents."
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18791.html

You don't have to be Jewish to follow Kabbalah. Kabbalah is not a religion-- it is a system of magical belief, which someone of any religion can practice.

Kabbalah is almost akin to a Jewish version of Wiccan magic.

Here is an excerpt from "Kabbalah Made Easy" by Rabbi Max Weiman:
<snip>
A male homosexual act is one of the transgressions stated in the Bible. It was a transgression before Christianity existed. Female homosexual acts are considered immoral but not in the same category. Why G-d creates people with a desire to do a transgression is a long and deep subject, not for this email.

Someone who commits homosexual acts and can’t stop is not rejected by G-d. They are still loved by G-d, even though they are making a mistake.

I have not really researched whether Kabbalah in general is homophobic, or if it's just Weiman and Korff that came up with that all on their own.

As a fellow Jew, I apologize for Ira Korff, Brian Camenker, and the other members of the evil 15%.

FYI: A "Grand Rabbi" (also known as a "Rebbe") is not elected or bestowed by the community. It is an inherited title. However, Mayor Menino of Boston *did* make the scumbag the official chaplain for the city of Boston. Now THAT is disgusting.

Loath to Give Advice, But "Values" Are Important
Massachusetts News
By Naomi Schaefer

<snip>
Given the tremendous responsibility of offering advice to even those who ask for it, he is, as he told the legislature "loath to offer it gratuitously to others." But when the Rebbe was asked to join the movement to ensure that the Commonwealth not recognize same-sex marriages, he agreed immediately. He told the legislature he was there because "the issue at hand is critical to the basic fiber and structure of the family and therefore to the health of our community and society in general."

<snip>

The Rebbe admits that he is something of an anomaly among observant Jews, in that most observant Jews do not become involved in secular matters. Most Jews, he explains, came to the United States with the attitude that, "This is a free country where we won't tell other people what to do, if they will allow us to observe our rituals and customs."

<snip>

He attributes this lack of respect with the way that Americans have become familiar with each other, almost immediately upon meeting. He emphasizes that "we are not all equal and we are not all friends," but there is a need to respect each other.

<snip>

The Rebbe believes that people will find it more and more difficult to isolate themselves and their children from the bad influences of society. The result, he hopes, will be that more religious and political leaders will become involved in trying to change secular society, the same way that he does.

Queer allies
The little-noticed alliance between gay marriage opponents and alleged terrorist sympathizers

<snip>

JewishWorldReview.com has discovered that prominent religious conservatives — Jews, Catholics and Evangelical Christians — are allied with a radical Islamic group to stop gay marriage. Pushing a constitutional amendment that would restrict marriage to heterosexuals, they work with the Islamic Society of North America. What is ISNA? According to terrorism expert Steve Emerson, ISNA:

<snip>

Social conservatives consider the amendment their last best hope to preserve heterosexual marriage. Cultural liberals view the amendment as a potentially serious roadblock to making gay marriage the law of the land. All this makes it likely that the Alliance for Marriage, is likely to come under increased scrutiny. It seems eager to use the "diversity" of its board members to deflect criticism and show that support for traditional marriage is broad-based.

<snip>

In 2001, JewishWorldReview.com reported exclusively that another problematic group, the American Muslim Council, served on the Alliance for Marriage advisory board with Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America's Washington lobbyist, Nathan Diament. Within hours of the story being published, the union withdrew from the advisory board.

<snip>

But they sounded not like religious figures but rather crass politicians who lack any kind of moral compass. Rabbi Barry Freundel, of the Rabbinical Council of America, who wouldn't say much publicly, remained on the board. Father Richard John Neuhaus, editor of First Things magazine and head of the Institute on Religion and Public Life, simply dismissed the AMC connection as the nature of alliances. So did Rabbi Daniel Lapin of Toward Tradition, which seeks to unite Jews and Christians.

Focus on the Family Action Update

>snip<
A first-ever voter registration effort concentrated in eight key states. Our goal was to get 500 pastors in each of these states to commit to register voters and we more tha achieved it, with strategic help from our allies in the state-based family policy councils. In all, 10,000 voter registration kits were distributed. In Florida alone, working through John Stemberger at the Florida Family Policy Council, we helped distribute registration kits to 1,000 churches.

"The group has until February 2006 to gather the 611,001 signatures required to qualify for the 2006 General Election ballot. The ballot language also must be approved by the Florida Supreme Court."

Here's to the hope that they can't do it. These people scare the everlovin' daylights out of me.

8. Why Are Those Christians So Obsessed With Homosex?
Why do they use their Christianity to justify their abject hatred and bigotry towards gays and lesbians (and their families)?

What is it about my having equal rights that disturbs them so much? How does my happiness that interferes with *their* happiness?

And where are all these "progressive" Christians I keep hearing so much about? You know... the ones who feel that even homos ought to have equal rights? Where are they? Why don't they speak up AS CHRISTIANS and oppose the Christian bigots and hate-mongers? (It happened recently in Maryland... so it's not impossible.)

11. Someone once told me anti-gay people read more about gays than gays do
For example:

Proctor & Gamble once placed a fairly racy advertisement in an obscure gay newspaper.

Some fundie group found it, and in their outrage posted this ad on their web page and told millions of people about it.

The idea being, I guess, that the 10,000 gay people who choose to read that newspaper should not be allowed to see it, but a million or so outraged Christians SHOULD see it and then complain to P&G about it.

Just how many gay newspapers do those people read???

It's like when Concerned Women for America find out about a secretive low-key kinky festival and then in their outrage they go to the press and makes sure everyone knows about all the "sick" things on the event schedule. That way, "decent people" are sure to be offended by what they otherwise would not have known about. And those same "decent people" would never have even heard about things like "Pony Play" and workshops called, "The Vagina: What's in it for you?"

Their job, it seems, is to offend people by showing them things they wouldn't have otherwise known to be offended by.

Here's an imaginary "Morality Play" about Concerned Women for America

Concerned Woman: "Hey, look behind you! There's a naked guy!"

Normal Person: "Why did you make me turn around and look at that? If I hadn't turned around, I would not have known he was there, and he's actually just standing in his apartment with the shades up entertaining his lady friend."

Other Concerned Woman: "I am glad you made me turn around and look at the naked man cavorting naked with a woman in his apartment, because now I am offended. I'll take pictures of the naked man and be sure millions of uptight conservative people see him so they can all complain about how offended they are. We can all pressure the building landlord and tell them to evict the naked man. Will you write the press release?"

12. Your Imaginary Morality Play Was Excellent...
and it captures exactly what many of those Christians are doing. In real life (as well as at DU) there are so many who go OUT OF THEIR WAY to find things to be "offended" at and to feel "threatened" by. And then, their response is hardly proportionate to the (imagined) offense.

14. People don't like people who aren't "like them"
According to Christian Fundamentalist dogma, every person is supposed to want to be part of a Family. A Family, of course, has a husband who earns all of the family's income, a wife whose sole job is to maintain the home, raise the four darling Christian children, and do volunteer work for the family's church, and the four darling Christian children who are either homeschooled or attend a good Christian academy where they learn the Four Rs: readin', 'ritin', 'rithmetic and religion.

Further, these Families are supposed to want nothing more than to attend church seven days a week, live in a modest home where they eat modest meals and wear modest clothes, and to contribute half of their pre-tax income to the church.

Because You, arwalden, do Not want to be part of a Family, you're no better than common pond scum. You are to be Ostracized. You are to be Ashamed Of Yourself...if you don't Get Your Ass Off to Faggit Re-Edukashun Class Right Now then Find A Nice Girl, Get Married And Start Producing Darling Christian Children, Dammit, you're going to be a rump roast for the devil as you're slowly turned on a spit over a raging fire.

Alas, tis true, yer gonna roast according to the Fundies' version of Hell...couldja save some room on that spit for me? I think I'm gonna need it too, and I'm not gay. I have no children. Tell some people that and they'll start screaming at you about how you're fuckin' with God's Divine Plan by not spreading your seed far and wide. "Yeah, and if my fuckin' seed worked I might be spreading it far and wide, but it doesn't--is that okay with you?" (Usually it is, but sometimes they'll offer to set you up with a "wonderful" infertility specialist so you can fulfill God's Divine Plan--which has something to do with generating more little atheists, apparently, because if I had kids they sure as hell wouldn't be Christians.)

16. I left out the best part, man
The part about how not only will you slowly be turned on a spit in the Devil's rotisserie, they'd be more than happy to send you there.

And that's the fucked-up part. The murderers who killed Matthew Shepard are, to the Phelps-followers, some sort of national hero. And they'd gladly do the same to anyone who doesn't have Good Christian Values--because Smiting Nonbelievers is The Lord's Work. That means everyone here, not just Allen and others like him.

I can deal with the hell part. As an atheist I don't believe it exists, therefore can't be sent there. It's the fact that people are willing to shoot Democrats that gets me. Because death does exist, and I'm not done living yet.

Sounds like divorce would be illegal too, because the vows all say "until death do we part"..and let no man put asunder....Maybe they better go back to the drawing board.. Since they like to literally interpret the bible, divorce should also be a thing of the past.. :evilgrin:...
