Car Bomb Kills 17 Outside Iraqi Hospital
MUSAYYIB, Iraq - A car bomb exploded in front of a hospital south of Baghdad Saturday, killing 17 people and wounding 16 others, police said.

A police captain, who refused to give his name, said the blast occurred in front of the Musayyib General Hospital.

The bombing comes a day after two attacks that killed at least 23 people. A vegetable truck rigged with explosives blew up Friday outside a Shiite mosque northeast of Baghdad, and gunmen sprayed automatic fire into a bakery in a Shiite district of the capital.

The attacks occurred as election officials announced provisional final results from the Jan. 30 elections for provincial councils in 12 of the 18 provinces, showing Shiite religious groups winning handily over secular tickets in local races in much of the country.

At least 17 people have been killed by a car bomb and a senior judge has been shot dead in further violence in Iraq.

The blast in the town of Musayyib took place near the hospital and a local council building at 0830 (0530 GMT), a police spokesman told AFP news agency.

Earlier, gunmen killed a prominent Iraqi judge on his way to work in the southern city of Basra.

The incidents come at the end of a violent week in Iraq in which scores of Iraqis have died.

The BBC's Jon Leyne, in Baghdad, says the violence is well up to the level seen in Iraq before the election two weeks ago - before the final election results have even been produced.

5. Let me be more clear about what's new in the BBC article

Dare I speculate that the apparent lull in violence in Iraq was simply a reprise to count the votes and regroup.

These attacks are on specific persons in leadership.
