Iraq Shi'ite leader urges Sadr to embrace politics

BAGHDAD, Feb 11 (Reuters) - A top Shi'ite leader urged firebrand cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Friday to take part in Iraq's political process following the national elections last month.

Sadr, who led two bloody uprisings against U.S.-led troops in April and August, repeatedly condemned the ballot, saying polls could not be held while foreign troops were on Iraqi soil.

But some members of his movement were election candidates in the United Iraqi Alliance -- a coalition of mainly Shi'ite Islamist groups that is expected to come out on top in the polls -- suggesting the cleric is keeping his options open.

A source at Sadr's office said no decision had been taken on whether his movement would take part in the political process and the drafting of a constitution, but that an announcement would be made soon.
