Group: Keep U.S. out of gay debate
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2005/02/08/924311-cp.html

MONTREAL (CP) - Canadians can decide the issue of same-sex marriage for themselves and don't need help from other countries, a coalition of same-sex marriage advocates said Tuesday.

Right-wing Christian Americans have been telephoning MPs to tell them how to vote on the proposed Civil Marriage Act. One Ontario MP has said she has received 30 calls from Americans in the last 10 days.

15. Well since George seems to think
That we have to show them the right form of government to live under, as per his inaguration address, why wouldn't we have an obligation to show them the right kind of "moral values" to have? And besides, doesn't George have a mandate on "moral values"

3. so it's true, then ...
I've been hearing rumours that Harper's sudden surge in interest about same-sex marriage up here is fuelled by new astroturf groups, supported (and in some cases funded) by US right-wing religious groups.

I guess Harper doesn't mind being used as a figurehead, for a low-rent version of "regime change". Or he thinks he can use it to his advantage. Watch out, Stephen! Bush's people can't be trusted -- the tiger's going to turn around and bite you.

4. They should tell the callers
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 03:55 PM by rocknation
"Unlike your government, we MEAN it when we say the church does not rule the state. If you want to live where religious doctrine supersedes governmental law, why don't you move to Iran?"

What else should the MPs say? Come on, let's be imaginative!

they will achieve the opposite of their goal. It will, if anything, turn those wavering toward supporting the bill rather than voting against it.

I am proud of my country and our court system that upholds our Charter of Rights for all. The bill will pass, even those in the faux Conservative party are conflicted and some will vote for the bill.

11. The Guardian newspaper and Clark County, Ohio
Funny how right-wingers were indignant at the thought of foreigners calling voters in Clark County, Ohio during the election campaign and telling them how to vote.

18. Exactly Siya
they would FREAK the hell OUT if people from another country DARED to call their repuke legislators and tell them how to vote on something. We'd never hear the end of the hate for that country.

But they think it's ok for them to do.

37. I spent two weeks in Canada this past summer
visiting my Mom in the Maritimes (Prince Edward Island, to be precise), where things are pretty liberal for the most part. I found that almost all the people I spoke with (usually initiated by me in the form of an apology for my government's overall Dickheadedness toward Canada and the world) were totally disgusted, pissed off and felt insulted by The Chimperor. Most people feel like Bush thinks we're far superior to Canada and doesn't mind displaying that message.
But there seemed to be a lot of warm feelings for Americans - like we got saddled with a terrible fuck-up against our will in 2000.

We're going back this summer and I wonder if the feelings will be as tender toward Americans since the US seems to have chosen him against all reason in this past election, and also because the US has AGAIN been butting in on Canadian business as though we have the right to tell them how to run their country. How dare these goons call Canadian MPs to tell them what to do!!!

At least all our friends and family up there know that we loathe this administration, but I still feel weird driving around with US license plates. I feel like putting a disclaimer on the side of my van just to set the record straight....
