Iran 'years away' from nuclear weapon - Rumsfeld

By Tabassum Zakaria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iran is believed to be years away from having a nuclear weapon and the United States has decided to use diplomacy, not military action, in dealing with the issue, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Sunday.

"It's fairly clear from the public statements of the Iranians that, that they are on a path of seeking a nuclear weapon and don't have it at the present time," Rumsfeld said in a taped interview with CNN's "Late Edition."

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani said in an interview with Reuters on Sunday that Iran would retaliate and accelerate its nuclear program if attacked.

"I don't make estimates, that's the business for the intelligence community. But they're (Iran) some years away according to the estimates, but I don't know if the estimates are correct or not," Rumsfeld told CNN.

"The president handles Iran policy, he's decided on a diplomatic route," he said. "They're on a diplomatic path."

6. And after the war they will deny they ever said these things
Even with videotape evidence.

If America falls for this bullshit again, I'm going to lose it. I'm afraid they will. I just heard on the radio that 65% believe there's a Social Security "crisis". Apparently BushCo propaganda works.

Rumsfeld: Iran 'Years Away' from Nuclear Weapon

Sun Feb 6, 2005

By Tabassum Zakaria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iran is believed to be years away from having a nuclear weapon and the United States has decided to use diplomacy, not military action, in dealing with the issue, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Sunday.

The Bush administration has been severely criticized for going to war against Iraq in 2003 by using the justification that Baghdad had weapons of mass destruction, when none have been found since the invasion.

12. Here we go again!
I wouldn't be surprised if they trotted out the same fradulant argument they used to invade Iraq to invade Iran. It isn't beyond their arrogance and contempt for the American people.

17. His whole Late Addition appearance was ridiculous.
Blitzer grilled him pretty good on many issues, from Abu Ghraib to armor on vehicles to the number of trained Iraqi police, etc.

He would start his response with "well I don't know, but" or "that's for so and so to tell you" or "I don't know if I agree with that" and then he'd go on to give some weak ending to his answers.

Totally ridiculouos. You would think he was a secretary working for a boss at the DOD, instead of the Secretary of Defense.

20. So the truth is...
Iran is on the verge of acquiring a nuclear weapon. These "estimates" are being produced by the same DIA idiots who believed the bullshit Chalabi was spooning them about Iraqi WMD. Half of the time it's incompetence, and half of the time it's neocon imperial hubris, but whatever Bushco says is ALWAYS the exact opposite of the truth.

23. Claim: Iraq had nukes but none were found. Now rumspuke says...
Iran doesn't have them, but all indications from the European nations shows that Iran isn't all that far making them.

God this kind of reasoning makes ones head explode.

this is his real message: Iraq has WMD's, even though we know they don't, so lets attack!!
Iran doesn't have WMD's, even though we know they do, so don't attack.

Appears to me like a cowards type of reasoning. Don't get me wrong, I don't, like, want or approve of war, but if these dolts wanted an excuse I believe that have a good one with Iran, but that's just me.
