3 million stolen nickels unearthed in back yard
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/sfl-pdnickels05feb05,0,5206467.story?coll=sfla-news-palm

<snip>

"Police officers on Friday dug up some unusual backyard buried treasure -- about three million stolen nickels that never made it to the Federal Reserve in New Orleans.

Miami-Dade police came across the nicked nickels, worth about $180,000, at a home in the Redlands area of southwest Miami-Dade. They were still in Federal Reserve bags, in a wooden box covered with a thick plastic tarp and buried about four feet deep."

<snip>

"The nickel caper began on Dec. 17 when truck driver Angel Ricardo Mendoza picked up the coins at the Federal Reserve facility in New Jersey.

Mendoza, who worked for a private trucking contractor, vanished, as did the 45,000 pounds of silvery loot. A few days later, the truck and trailer turned up at a Fort Pierce truck stop, but he and the nickels were gone."

1. Never bury your booty or
bodies in your own back yard.

20. I learned this lesson from the guy who
murdered his wife and put her body in the freezer in his basement. He did go to the extra precaution of putting a lock on the freezer door but after a couple of years his kids got curious and popped the lock off; thus discovering Mom and their Dad's misdeed.

True story from what I understand.

2. Glad they recovered them. Not worth much, but...
some of us were concerned they could be used as anti-personnel additives to bombs.

7. Yeah, but this is a good sized coin and would pack a whallop
Quarters probably protected better, dimes too light to do as much damage.

Does it worry you and Agent Mike that I think about shit like this? Ah, well, there is no point in thinking the opposition is as polite as we like to be. ;)

23. Pardon my addition.....
But a similar thing happened in the war between TX and Mexico.

At the battle of San Jacinto, the Texans had a captured cannon, and a good supply of powder for it (which they had found hidden in the bottom of a shipload of flour), but no cannonballs or grapeshot to shoot out of it.

No problem..... :evilgrin:

The commanders set the blacksmiths to cutting up horseshoes into big chunks and they loaded them into the cannon.

They dubbed it "Texas grape-shot".

Egad..... :o

18. Love your Dean graphic!
Did you create it?

Yeah, this is totally off-topic. Sorry; couldn't resist. I still have a "Dean for President" sticker on my car. I'm thrilled about his nomination.

As another non sequiter...I saw your post last night about the encounter with the Young Repub, and that it ended badly. Since you like him, I won't refer to him as Hitler Youth, although that's how I think of them. :P Anyway, if you want to stay friends with him, you should avoid politics, period. Just have the understanding that there are things about which the two of you disagree. I have a couple of friends like that, and we just don't talk politics. They're not particularly hard-core Repubs, more like old-school conservatives, which is not nearly so drastic as the neocon agenda of today.

Now, my sister is another story. I've practically cut all ties with her aside from the occasional "hello" phone call. She's a fundamentalist Christo-Fascist Zombie who doesn't believe in evolution. When she told me that, I almost fell over.

So, I respect your ability to be open-minded and accepting of others, and encourage you to continue doing the same. It's a much more pleasant way to be.

Peace!

RV

I can't wait until we have some real leadership in the party again.

Yeah, political differences aren't going to ruin our frindship. We'll just talk about other stuff.
