Rule on shooting
gray wolves overturned
Judge: Bush administration
violated Endangered Species Act
The rule allowed ranchers to shoot gray wolves on sight if they were attacking livestock.
Updated: 3:51 p.m. ET Feb. 1, 2005GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the Bush administration violated the Endangered Species Act when it relaxed protections on many of the nation’s gray wolves.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Robert E. Jones in Portland rescinds a rule change that allowed ranchers to shoot wolves on sight if they were attacking livestock, said Michael Robinson of the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group.

In April 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service divided the wolves’ range into three areas and reclassified the Eastern and Western populations as threatened instead of endangered. The Eastern segment covers the area from the Dakotas east to Maine, while the Western segment extends west from the Dakotas. The agency left wolves in the Southwest classified as endangered.

6. Hip! Hip! Hooray! I just gave more than I could afford two days
ago to Defenders of Wildlife to protect wolves in Alaska. I hope it helps. Bush is trying to gut the ESA anyway. Maybe this will slow him down so we can creep toward his going back to Crawford. One thing for sure, noone at the UN will ever ask him to be in charge of anything. He certainly will not be joining Carter's group, keeping elections free and fair. He can cut brush all day and night.

14. I'm sure the efforts have already begun...
...I'm sure the right wing echo chamber has already begun the "activist judge" mantra.

Doesn't the judge know that the Chimp promised to protect us from the wolves during his election campaign?

15. U.S. Loses Ruling on Gray Wolves (Bush Violated Edangered Species Act)

U.S. Loses Ruling on Gray Wolves

Tue Feb 1, 8:39 PM ET Science - AP

By JEFF BARNARD, Associated Press Writer

GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the Bush administration violated the Endangered Species Act when it relaxed protections on many of the nation's gray wolves.

Fish and Wildlife Service divided the wolves' range into three areas and reclassified the Eastern and Western populations as threatened instead of endangered. The Eastern segment covers the area from the Dakotas east to Maine, while the Western segment extends west from the Dakotas. The agency left wolves in the Southwest classified as endangered.

But the judge ruled that the government acted improperly by combining areas where wolves were doing well, such as Montana, with places where their numbers had not recovered.

"Interior Secretary Gale Norton tried to gerrymander the entire contiguous 48 states so that wolves in a few areas would make up for the absence of wolves in much larger regions," Robinson said. "Now, instead of drawing lines on the map based on political considerations, any future lines must be based on science."

16. where the fuck did they come up with that title?
saying the U.S. "lost" a ruling in this case is like saying i lost an argument with myself.

bush lost. the u.s. simply made a decision that he was being inconsistent with the law. shocking. shocking, in that he's inconsistent all the time, but he's almost never called on it.

19. Yes!!!
One of the evangelists, Lehayne, on Larry King tonight said that animals were put here for our use, and they come second to man.

Does he not have the common sense to know if the other animals, fish, and birds disappear that so will we? Bush evangelicals are coming under fire for not giving concern to our environment and the creatures.

20. Now that's something to howl about! Did you know...
in Alaska there's been controversy because the government has been allowing wolves to be slaughtered by hunters in helicopters. There was a petition not long ago asking the GOP governor to stop the practice, though I doubt it had any effect.

While staying in a cabin this summer near Mt. McKinley, we had the thrill of hearing the wolves howling at night. I'm glad they're protected now.

the way they say the U.S "loses"--??
Some kind of propaganda twist aimed at the average dumbass to make them think killing wolves is something good to do.
How obvious can they get?
