Police: Prosecutor Mugged After Calling Escort Service

POSTED: 6:48 am EST February 1, 2005
UPDATED: 9:50 am EST February 1, 2005

TAMPA, Fla. -- A senior assistant state attorney general was hit with pepper spray and mugged after he called an escort service to a hotel, police said.

Assistant Attorney General John Rimes was beaten and robbed of about $500 on Thursday while staying at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore, according to a Tampa police report released Monday.

Rimes, 54, was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital until Sunday, hospital officials said.

The police report states that two women arrived at Rimes' hotel room late Thursday after he called an escort service for female companionship.

Police said Rimes had $200, but the women told him he needed more. He went to an ATM and withdrew $300.

Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 11:56 AM by rocknation
...someone knocked on his hotel room door. Rimes saw a well-dressed man through the peephole and opened the door...the man used pepper spray on Rimes, beat him and took the money...

Why in the world would he have opened the door to a male stranger if wasn't expecting anyone else? Either he's incredibly naive, or he ordered out for MALE companionship, too!

Kerry, John

RIMES, JAMES C MR JR
TALLAHASSEE,FL 32302
ENWRIGHT CONSULTING/CONSULTANT

Neither of them appear to be the guy in the story based on their employment information. A CPA isnt an attorney. Nor is a consultant.

42. where do you get that from?
He began working in the AG's office since 1978, when Reubin Askew, a Dem, was governor. I know some pretty hard core Dems that are "assistant attorney generals", both at the federal and state level. They are career government attorneys and don't get hired based on, or leave based on, the party in control at any given time.

Here's a bio of the guy: John J. Rimes, III is an Assistant Attorney General in Tallahassee where he has been a member of the Administrative Law Section of the Attorney General's Office since 1978. He has represented the state in several growth management matters, including drafting the initial zoning regulations for the Capitol Center Planning Commission in Tallahassee, and, most recently, the litigation over the siting of a cement plant near the Ichetucknee River and Springs. http://www.eluls.org/growth_management_may2001.html

I don't know the guy and don't have any reason to defend him. I just think we look foolish when we start labelling anye who gets caught with their pants down as a repug without any supporting evidence.

53. who said he was the "top assistant"
The story says he is a senior assistant attorney general. I don't know for certain, but I suspect that there are lots of "assistant attorneys general" in the Florida AG's office and a fair number of "senior" Ass't AGs. Given that he's been there since 1978, its hardly an indication of much that he's a "senior" assistant AG. The AG's office is divided in numerous divisions. If someone can show me something concrete that indicates that he is a repug or even that he's particularly political, that's fine. I haven't seen it yet and I think we skate on thin ice when we start assuming political affiliation based on sexual pecadillos.

64. how old are you back at? (just kidding I can tell you must be youthful)
Let's not kid ourselves about what happens to male physiology over 40. A perfectly healthy 54 year old can have occasion to use medical assistance in these matters. Heck, I've known of thirtysomethings to use Viagra. No 54 year old male functions like a 19 year old male, no matter how much jogging and clean living and non-smoking he may try, and this gentlemen was planning on servicing two ladies -- and perhaps another gentleman as well, considering he did open the door to a male.

I would say the odds are good that he was using Viagra or Cialis.

And it isn't a matter of need. You might not need Viagra to perform but it may certainly enhance the experience. Don't kid yourself that this drug isn't being used recreationally, because it is.

I know a man, in his thirties, who was combining Viagra, Prozac, and cocaine to prolong his experience. No one with a "serious health problem" should try that -- this is a sport for the toughest of circulatory systems!

In any case, I just called the Media Relations person at NARAL and she was pretty darned amused.

I bet this will make "Oddly Enough" and "Weird News."

Oh, and I missed THIS the first time:

The police report states that two women arrived at Rimes' hotel room late Thursday after he called an escort service for female companionship.

On edit: I would much rather see him caught on tape and arrested than beaten by an angry pimp. That's just not right.

Anyway, do you think he'll be charged with soliciting a hooker?

Actually, it sounds like TWO counts of soliciting a hooker (there seem to have been TWO hookers).

Also, he withdrew money from the ATM specifically to pay the hooker.

Does making an electronic transfer (ATM withdrawal) for the purpose of an illegal activity make it a federal crime?

Doesn't make him republican or a democrat. Doesn't even make him a
"self righteous hypocrite". Just makes him sort of sad.

For what its worth, he started out in the AG's office when Reuben Askew (D) was governor. (scroll down this link for his bio) http://www.eluls.org/growth_management_may2001.html

Even that doesn't necessarily indicate his politics then or now and the fact that he doesn't seem to have given political contributions to anyone suggests that he's not a political person.

41. Both
If he had sex with a prostitute, that could put MY health at risk. It's one of the reason why hetero women in some U.S. communities are the fastest growing group of new HIV cases: their partners are engaging in unprotected sex with others and then coming home and engaging in unprotected sex with the spouse, who is none the wiser until her symptoms get her to a doctor.

Not to mention the effects on family income and stability, and just a rage at "how stupid could you be?", "why did you do this?", and "how could you have so little respect for our marriage and me as a human being?"

55. onenote, who is saying that only republicans engage in this sort of

of behavior. It appears to me, that republicans want to imply only democrats do this sort of behavior because they are all good christians and have morals but democrats aren't christian or have any morals (this is HIGHLY offensive to me). In reality they are JUST as guilty as democrats in making wrong choices. The difference between republicans and democrats are the republicans want to judge others and forget all about their own sins while democrats accept the fact that no one is perfect and do not judge others and accept the bad with the good since they know they aren't perfect themselves. 36. How do I know he's a Republican?
1) A Democrat wouldn't have tried to shortchange the two ladies
2) A Democrat would have enough sense not to let a pimp into the room to beat and rob him

57. That's because
they are so lacking in a fun personality that people don't want to be around them. Think about it. They are either obsessed with money or gawd. And many of them even managed to combine the two. Would you like to hang out with someone who yaks about that incessantly all day long?
