Alexander (R - TN) defects from Republican air pollution plan
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sen. Lamar Alexander says he will support a bipartisan plan to reduce air pollution in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park instead of the one offered by his party.

Alexander, a Republican, said he plans to announce on the Senate floor Monday why he is rejecting the Bush administration proposal and backing a plan by Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., and Republican Sens. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and Judd Gregg of New Hampshire.

"This is a bill that I think will do the best job for Tennessee and the country in cleaning up the air," Alexander told The Knoxville News Sentinel in an interview in Washington. "We don't want our grandchildren coming to see the Great Smoggy Mountains instead of the Great Smoky Mountains.

1. Iwould have bet the shirt off my back that my junior Senator would
have supported this regime in mindless lockstep. Will wonders never cease?

3. In TN we're glad to see this but I believe Alexander has a home
in, near, or viewing the Smokies so he'd be really aware of what the pollution does to the air around here.

Nonetheless, I'll still give him some credit though it is an issue of personal benefit to him and his TN cronies.
