Aljazeera: Iraqis show mixed response to polls
This seems to be a more accurate assessment-as is par for the course.

Iraqis show mixed response to polls

Sunday 30 January 2005, 15:00 Makka Time, 12:00 GMT

A number of Mosul's Kurdish residents have defied death threats and an unstable security situation and headed towards the polls, but in some other Iraqi cities no one is voting.

As polls opened across the country, early signs showed a poor turnout of voters in Mosul. US soldiers were seen driving around city blocks asking why residents were not voting.

<snip>

Sunni turnout negligible

Polling stations in several towns in Iraq have not opened five hours after nationwide voting started on Sunday, the country's electoral commission said.

<snip>

Kurdish turnout high

While many voters across Iraq were hesitant to venture outside because of a highly volatile security situation and the promise of major attacks, Kurds in Arbil and other northern Iraqi cities have been rushing to polling stations.

2. It seems the US media is only reporting the turnout of one group
that they then use to represent the whole population. Turnout could be 72% in some areas. So half truths a spread once again.

they have been showing video footage of Kurds voting...
and to no ones surprise they had a great turnout. The US media has been using the Kurd footage as representative of all of Iraq. Stupid muriKans won't figure it out.

12. 72%?????????ROTFLA
   the US has no clue to turnout numbers this early, but what the hell, let's call it at 72%. You knew this would happen. Bush and Co. calling it a great day for freedom while people still die daily.

3. bushies gang of thugs what to project an illusion of democracy in
Iraq -- just as they have successfully projected the illusion of democracy in the US.

If you ask the vast majority of Americans if they lived in a democracy they would say -- yes. But they are living an illusion.

7. What a gross misuse of our service people.
How would we feel if armed soldiers were driving up and down our neighborhoods "asking" why we weren't voting? And doesn't that make them even bigger targets? This whole thing is so wrongheaded and so dangerous.

Maybe I just don't understand what "pro-life" means to a Republican.

10. They're pro-BIRTH, not pro life. Once the fetus is expelled from the
mother, they don't give a damn about it.

I.e., abortions are UP under Bush because poverty is up.

8. CNN is reporting 72 percent turn out. Of course this comes from the Iraqi
interm government with no independent confirmation. But at least we don't expect responsible journalist.

9. That number flies in the face of the good reporter who last night
on CNN laughed hysterically at the turnout question. She was at a polling place when it opened. She was still waiting for someone to show up. She just laughed because the instudio guy was fishing for good news and she had nothing. It was pretty telling. I hope CNN archives that footage.

18. Not many are voting
Less than 25% of eligible Iraqi expatriates living in 14 countries selected as polling centres outside Iraq have registered to vote in Sunday's elections.

The body handling voter registration outside Iraq says 1.2 million Iraqi expatriates are eligible to vote in the 14 selected countries, but only 280,303 have signed up for the ballot.

20. After seeing "Conrol Room," I know Al Jazeera is more credible than
Faux State Television and CNN. This seemed to be one of the fairest and most sensible assesments of the elections that I have read. High turnout in some areas. No turnout in many others.

25. Any old death #s around?
Were there more killed today than on any other election day there? I'm guessing more were killed today than when Saddam was in power.
But i'm sure with this administration, we'll never know how many were killed today.

27. 44 were killed.
37 in one suicide attack and 7 around the country.

Im acutually suprised by that number, thought it would be much higher.
