Meeting agreed to renegotiate NAFTA, says Martin

FREDERICTON - Prime Minister Paul Martin said on Thursday he wanted to negotiate changes to NAFTA, and that U.S. President George W. Bush had agreed to a Canada–U.S.–Mexico summit on the matter.

Martin said officials from the three countries were working out details of the summit, including a date.

The prime minister had raised the issue with Bush during the president's trip to Ottawa in December, and again during a phone call about two weeks ago, the Canadian Press reported.

"What I said is, 'Listen, there are gaps in NAFTA and they've got to be fixed.' These apply to the Mexicans as much as they will apply to us," Martin said after a Liberal caucus meeting in Fredericton, N.B.

very misleading headline. They aren't renegotiating NAFTA, they just want to stop these endless silly disputes, and actually stick to the agreement they have.

I'm not thrilled with BC for agreeing to NAFTA, but at least I felt comfortable that he was competentant in a negotiattion. I can't trust Shrub to talk to my dog!
