Cop who arrested Oswald dies

From correspondents in Little Rock, Arkansas
January 28, 2005

MAURICE (Nick) McDonald, the Dallas policeman who arrested Lee Harvey Oswald little more than an hour after the November 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy, has at age 76.

(snip)

Mr McDonald arrived at Dealey Plaza minutes after Kennedy was fatally shot while passing through in his motorcade. Shortly afterward, Mr McDonald was sent to a movie theatre where a suspicious person had been reported.

As Mr McDonald approached the suspect in the darkened theatre, Oswald rose from his seat and struck him, then pushed a pistol into McDonald's abdomen and pulled the trigger. The hammer of the weapon was blocked by the flesh of Mr McDonald's palm, the officer later recounted.

(snip)

"It was almost a burden at times, but he bore his place in history with honour and dignity," Rose McDonald said.

1. If any DUers are interested in Lee Harvey Oswald --
-- please consider reading Don DeLillo's LIBRA, a novel of Oswald's life.

Unbelievably interesting insights into the JFK assassination.

2. I just learned on the History Channel that JFK approved the assassination..
..of the South Vietnamese president (Ngo Dinh Diem) less than 3 weeks prior to his own assassination. I've always heard about the theories surrounding Castro, but I've never heard anything suggesting JFK was killed out of retaliation for Diem's murder. Why not, I wonder?

3. I have heard of that theory
The theory that Kennedy's assassination was a revenge killing by Diem supporters has been out their for a while. I know some one wrote a book based on that theory many years ago and the book may have been fiction. Sorry I can't remember the author or the book's title. Like I said, it was a long time ago.

Not too many people subscribe to the Diem revenge killing conspiracy theory which is probably why you have never heard about it.

11. JFK did NOT order assassination of Diem brothers.
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 10:55 PM by Octafish
That story was planted by the right wing. During Nixon's term, CIA goon and White House plumber E Howard Hunt faked State Department cables and put them in his White House safe to implicate Kennedy. The right has done all it can to blacken Kennedy's name. In fact, the guy who ordered Diem's assassination was Averell Harriman, the same guy who was business partner with Prescott Bush in helping fund Hitler. Small world.

EDIT: Added a link and the info below:

JFK named Harriman Ambassador-at-Large for Southeast Asia. Instead of helping defuse the worsening crisis when CIA decided Diem had to go, he acted the rogue agent and did all he could to ramp-up war in Vietnam. Seemingly a super-hawk in the fight against communism, it was Harriman who ordered the assassination of South Vietnamese President Diem, his brother and a Catholic priest accompanying them into exile. The result was chaos, from which the US and South Vietname goverments never fully recovered.

JFK was furious when he heard that the Diem brothers had been assassinated. He ordered the withdrawal of all American forces from Vietnam, a war he viewed as unwinnable. Less than a month later, JFK was dead. And LBJ signed orders stating the US would provide whatever level of support was needed to preserve the government of South Vietnam. A big mistake for our nation, the nation of Vietnam, and for our world.

16. Good post, Octafish...I wish more people understood what the Right...
...has done over the years to try to implicate both JFK and RFK in so many activities in which they never participated.

It seems that the lessons of the smearing of Clinton have also been ignored.

9. Call me a far left skeptic, but this picture does not --
-- inspire in me the notion that freedom is on the march.

It does inspire shame, that an American administration would authorize and employ such activity.

Whatever shortcomings leftists may have perceived in John Kerry and John Edwards, I do not believe either of them would abide the abominable behavior and abuse of power the Bush administration and Alberto Gonzales are obviously guilty of.

I want a new election. Now.

18. One would certainly believe that those who planted false information...
...so many years ago would have had to atone for their crimes. Unfortunately, their political descendants have been able to maintain their power base over the years, and are firmly in control today. It is extremely unlikely they will be rooted out anytime soon.

IMHO, people who believe that JFK ordered the Diem brothers killed are the same people who have been all too eager to believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. And unfortunately, the same crowd will believe anything they are told about Iran's alleged nuclear weapons capability.

12. Here's a link that's still alive.
George Herbert Walker Bush was in Dallas the day JFK was murdered. The FBI says so:

One week later, "Mr. George Bush of the Central Intelligence Agency" reported on the Cuban exile community's attitudes regarding the assassination to J Edgar Hoover:

It's a small world.

14. Bush41 is the key to every major event since JFK63
And someone from Arkansas always seems to be
close to or in those major events.

I didn't know Tippit was close to McDonald.
Notice how he McDonald was sent to the theatre
after being in Dealey, but didn't know Oswald
was the min suspect?

Died of diabetes huh? Overweight?

It’s interesting in reviewing the above (partial) list, just how much ultra-right, conservative Republican leadership has really been. More than a listing of criminality, the list demonstrates there have been many treasonous activites against “We the People” through “business opportunities” in the finance, energy, and defense industries.

There is one FAMILY name that runs through all the history, the four decades since the JFK administration. Since the very hour of President Kennedy’s death, and through the list of sinister events and unrelenting criminality noted above — a record of infamy stretching back 41 years today — appears the name George Herbert Walker Bush, a tradition continued by his son, George Walker Bush, beard of the BFEE.

17. It's really too bad that so many people have failed to do their own...
...homework on the events surrounding the JFK assassination and those events that have taken place since that time. Many of the Rightwingers in control today are the figurative descendants of the Rightwingers that existed in the days following WWII up through the JFK assassination.

If you want to read one of the lamest JFK assassination conspiracy theories ever perpetrated on the American public, pick up a copy of "The Warren Commission", and start checking facts. If you're not already hopelessly brainwashed like so many Americans today, you'll be amazed at what you find.
