Tandy Sworn in As First Female DEA Chief
WASHINGTON -- Karen P. Tandy was sworn in Tuesday as the first woman to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration, which is expected to shoulder more of the antidrug workload with the FBI's renewed focus on terrorism.

Tandy, a former prosecutor and Justice Department official, said her main goal is for the DEA to work on dismantling drug organizations completely, from their smugglers to their top commanders to their money handlers.

The DEA's roughly 4,600 agents are expected to grow in the coming years as the FBI handles fewer and fewer drug cases. Tandy said the agency, criticized by a recent White House report as not focused on its core mission, will meet the challenge.

"The American people expect more from us, and we will deliver in the weeks and months to come," Tandy said.

"Karen will bring her compassion and resolve to our struggle against drugs."

ummm...who's struggling against drugs, John? ROFLMAO

Tandy Targets Bongs and Pipes

As OCDETF Director, Karen Tandy was responsible for the infamous operations "Pipe Dreams" and "Headhunter", the February 2003 raids on more than 100 homes and businesses throughout the nation that sell bongs and pipes favored by pot smokers. Fifty people, including many in California where marijuana paraphernalia is legal, were charged under federal law with trafficking in illegal drug paraphernalia.
