Israeli Women Lawmakers See Red Over Rabbi's Ruling
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Female legislators in Israel have seen red after a leading rabbi compared women who wear the color to prostitutes.

Protesting against a ritual ruling by Rabbi Eliyahu Abergil, head of the rabbinical court in the southern city of Beersheba, banning Jewish women from dressing in red, several woman lawmakers wore the color in parliament Monday.

"It's not up to a rabbi to tell us to whether to wear black or red or any other color," said Erela Golan, a legislator from the Shinui party who organized the protest. "Just because we wear red doesn't mean we are prostitutes."

Let's see ... a top religious "leader" declaring edicts, regarding the dress of female citizens, as it pertains to morality and religious/ethical codes.

Sounds familiar. When do we start bombing?

5. Not ISRAEL. Fundamentalist Religious people please -
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. Israel is a democracy and there are religious people there - like here - who have strong opinions.

Please, enough Israel bashing. Learn something already.

7. We are supposed to be a Democracy here too, so what does that get us?
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 01:28 AM by BrklynLiberal
Democracies have hypocrites and fundmentalists too, and saying that one portion of its citizenry is trying to impose its beliefs on another is not Israel bashing.
But we do have to distinguish between the government of a country and its people.
As Americans, WE do not want to be blamed for all the decisions that Bush is making right now. Right? There are many Israelis who are against what their government is doing, just as we oppose what our govt is doing.

I know several Israelis who oppose Sharon. Clearly some people did not bother to read past the headline. A public protest by politicians is more than equally backwards statements by clergymen are met with here in the USA.

11. Jews that go fundamental
When will the populace of Israel wake up and realize that their leadership is just a bunch of radical religious evangelicals? When will they see the corruption of their country?

Again, Israel and the United States embrace extremism to the world, and get seen as such for it as a whole.
