U.S. Will Veto Resolution Demanding U.N. Ensure Safety of Arafat
The United States will veto a draft resolution demanding that the United Nations ensure the safety of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat because it would be seen only as a condemnation of Israel, Security Council diplomats said Tuesday.

1. Hmmm, I have a thought...
Since the US ignored the will of the UN in invading Iraq, and since the US refused to post a resolution before the security council because any new resolution drafted by the US would have been vetoed, then, I ask: WHY SHOULD THE UN CARE what we think about protecting Yasser Arafat? Were I in Kofi Annans' shoes, I believe I would probably proceed to place UN peacekeepers around Arafat without even a vote in the security council. What's good for the goose...:hippie:

2. See, it's stuff like this that hurts our reputation as a fair broker..

We ignore the UN when we don't like what it's saying, but use it ruthlessly to deny others expression of their concerns.

This will do little to improve our position with the Palestinians, either.

A poor job of diplomacy all around, I think. But what's new?

3. So is the US position...
that Israel is free to assasinate Arafat?

4. To meet U.S. requirements for 'evenhandedness,' the resolution would
have to request that Israel merely maim Arafat, rather than killing him.

Isn't denouncing suicide bombings enough? After all, the resolution is aimed at a specific threat from Israel.
