Lower sentiment reading surprises economists who expected increase.
January 21, 2005: 10:12 AM EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. consumer sentiment eased in early January, according to a survey released Friday.

The University of Michigan's preliminary reading of its consumer confidence index for January was 95.8, down from December's final reading of 97.1, according to market sources who saw the subscription-only report.

Analysts on average had forecast that the index would rise to 98.0. <snip>

They even manipulate the headline to encourage the misinterpretation that this is about the state of Michigan, when it's about the accepted national barometer of Consumer Confidence maintained by the University of Michigan.
