National memorial to Martin Luther King still short of funds
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States marks the birthday of Martin Luther King, as a private group struggles to gather funds to raise a monument to the slain civil rights leader among Washington's landmark memorials.


The Martin Luther King Jr National Memorial Project Foundation still needs 66 million dollars before it can begin construction of the monument authorized by Congress in 1996.


The committee organizing US President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s inauguration, by contrast, expects to raise 40 million dollars by Thursday to fund the three-day celebration.


The King memorial must also be funded with private money, but has suffered from a lack of visibility, organizers said.
