DA Arrested in Texas Court on Drug Charge ( methamphetamines R-Texas)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050112/ap_on_fe_st/da_arrested_in_court&e=1

PAMPA, Texas - The district attorney for five Panhandle counties was arrested while in a courtroom and charged with possession of methamphetamine.

Rick Roach was charged with a federal misdemeanor for knowingly and intentionally possessing the drug, said Kathy Colvin, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

FBI (news - web sites) agents arrested Roach at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Gray County Courthouse. He remained in federal custody Wednesday. During an initial court appearance in Lubbock, he denied having the drug and said he would mount "a vigorous defense."

Roach, district attorney for Gray, Hemphill, Lipscomb, Roberts and Wheeler counties, was 11 days into his second four-year term. He has been a licensed attorney for 25 years, and was Roberts County attorney for 10 years before being elected district attorney.

6. this news doesn't surprise me at all
Pampa is full of icky folks in the judicial system

(can say that because I lived there and worked with the DA and criminal attorneys there - 20 years ago - but I can't imagine that this non-progressive place would ever ever change)

8. will methamphetamine ultimately do to white Red America...
... what the crack "epidemic" -- and moreover, what the law enforcement response to the crack epidemic -- did to urban Black America in the eighties and early nineties?

Meth use seems to have become awfully prevalent among whites of all social classes in the Southern, Western, and Midwestern states.

10. Hard to say
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 04:26 PM by Southpaw Bookworm
If you look generally at federal efforts in dealing with meth, they're all about treatment and prevention, and considering drug abuse a public health issue. Does the creamy white complexion (before they start picking the invisible bugs off of their skin) of meth abusers made a difference in this attitude? Or is it just an issue on enlightenment on the part of the policy analysts and government workers who actually make policy? It's not for me to say.

HOWEVER, law enforcement efforts nonetheless still get the vast majority of federal funds for drug abuse.

15. It's doing plenty of damage, though law enforcement..
seems to lag behind. I think we'll see a change in the laws be for we see large numbers of whites locked up for meth, unless crime and rural gangs become a big problem.

I'd say meth use is most prevalent among lower and lower middle class rural and suburban people. I've heard it referred to as the "poor man's Starbucks", since blue collar workers take it to keep their energy up during the long hours they have to work to make ends meet.
