When The New York Times Company, owner of The Boston Globe, recently announced it would buy a 49 percent stake in Boston Metro ( see the addendum below ), the free newspaper distributed to commuters, did it know it was also buying into a corporate culture of crude racism?
NEW YORK, January 10, 2005 -- On April 4 through 6, 2003, officials of the Metro International newspaper chain held a sales conference near Rome. Top executives of all the nearly two dozen Metro newspapers were there -- the Managing Directors (i.e. publishers), along with sales directors, editors and others. The annual corporate event, complete with lavish food, open bar and costly entertainment, is meant to celebrate sales and motivate managers for the next year.

5. Evidently, there are two standards.....

Had the story involved an executive with a Louisiana or Mississippi or Alabama newspaper, it would have been the talk of DU-just more evidence of how evil and right-wing all southerners are. However, since the offenders are from the north east, its apparently okay for them to make jokes about "niggers". No big deal.

At least in the red states we are not so blind as to believe we are above reproach.

the metro is a worLd pubLication; the peopLe they keep referring to as making the racist comments aren't from a bLue state; the parties they reference happened in europe.

those stories are apaLLing.

that somehow has something to do with boston and the metro's distribution here? i've read one person wiLLing to be quoted - she was fired and cLaimed racism. it may be true (i reaLLy have no idea) but i have to put the brakes on whenever a "news story" eminates from the right.

True, the parties occurred in Europe, but the offending executive, I gather, lives and worked on the US east coast and, as such, represents all blue states just like Trent Lott represents all southerners.

Mostly I'm just pissed because someone I formerly respected made some cheap, stereotypical remarks about the south earlier. I decided to waste some time by pointing out every "blue state" hypocricy I could find (and thats pretty easy today). Its really disappointing when people show their ignorant prejudices.

4. I read the story in AM-NY today - they gave the mediachannel link

as they said - they didn't want to repeat the words. Apparently, the apology was based on a poor translation from English - but Nylundh is fluent in English. Madiachannel called their statement
"One of the oddest non-denial denials" seen this side of Richard Nixon.
