Republicans Worry About Bush Poll Numbers
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&ncid=716&e=15&u=/nm/20030914/ts_nm/politics_bush_dc

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With President Bush's poll numbers dropping, many of his fellow Republicans are uneasy about the state of the U.S. economy, rising budget deficits, and the U.S. military operation in Iraq. snip

"The White House needs to get back on the offensive and talk about some ideas and policies," said a senior Republican strategist in Washington, who asked to remain unidentified. snip

The U.S. economy has lost close to 3 million jobs since Bush took office in January 2001, a situation the president blames on a recession under way when he began his term, the Sept. 11 attacks, corporate scandals and Iraq war jitters. snip

Some Republicans are concerned Bush seems to be spending an inordinate amount of time raising money for his 2004 re-election campaign race, lowering his profile from commander in chief to solicitor in chief and leaving him more open to Democratic assault.

Bush has been to 20 fund-raising events in 12 states and Washington since mid-June and has raised more than $60 million, on his way to a goal of $170 million for a Republican primary campaign for which he has no challengers.

2. ".............talk about some ideas and policies." Talk?
What was actually said there: "We need to get some fresh propaganda out to our media allies, in an attempt to quell any negative feelings among the public. Of course, in actuality, we will not change course one bit."

3. What worries me more is when he's doing other things
like trying to make it so the FBI can subpeona people without court order, have no judicial review, no bail for selected individuals, and the death penalty for those convicted of "terrorism", which, I fear, will be soon be defined as anyone not agreeing with the neocons.

Bush's Fake Economic Forum

As this article is being written (August, 2002), Dubya is trying to brainwash the American people into thinking that the economy is okay, that only a few "bad-apple" CEOs of corporations have crossed the line of criminal behavior, and that no new legislation is necessary to stop runaway corporate crime that his administration has encouraged.

Fortunately, a considerable number of Americans, including even some of the usually supine press, are seeing through this propaganda swindle. An August 13, 2002 MSNBC opinion piece by William Saletan brands the effort "Bush’s Fake Forum."

"This afternoon at the President’s Economic Forum in Waco, Texas, President Bush and Vice President Cheney sat side by side on the stage of a packed auditorium for more than an hour. That’s the first time they've been that close together for that long in public since Sept. 11. Evidently they're no longer afraid of terrorists. What they're afraid of is Americans."

An August 14, 2003 Washington Post editorial called the "forum" a confidence game.

"The theme of those reports was that the country needs lower taxes, that most corporate executives are honest and that the solution to corporate scandals is less, not more, regulation.
"Recession and the cost of war and the cost of homeland defense have increased our deficits," Mr. Bush said yesterday. At his forum, there was no one to remind him that tax cuts are playing their part too. In the real world, they're part of the arithmetic."

Frank Rich's 8/17/02 Op/Ed, "The Waco Road to Baghdad" caught even more of the brainwashing aspect of the fake forum.

"Though the president's harshest critics think he's stupid, I've always maintained that the real problem is that he thinks we are stupid. He never doubts that his show will distract us from bad news. Waco was supposed to make us forget the latest round of economic headlines: stagnant wages, slowed growth, new all-time records in personal bankruptcies and consumer borrowing."

The fake forum was seen in its true colors when the Bushites had to admit that the participants were coached in what to say. Their attempt to call the coaching material "talking points" just didn't cut it.

9. Everyone is to blame but Bush according to him and the right wingers
Why should Americans elect Bush in 2004 if he isn't doing anything?

Elect someone to blame, if nothing else.

11. So they're worried...
because people are gradually waking up to what a terrible president he is, and how harmful his policies are? What would make sense, would be to change the policies that do the country harm, instead of trying to hide them with more useless talk.

14. They notice...
when they lose their jobs, and can't find new ones. They notice then their houses are foreclosed on because they can't make the mortgage payment. They notice when their children are sent to Iraq and come back either in body bags, or minus limbs.

The pity is that the repugs only take notice when they worry about getting re-elected so they can do even more damage. If poll numbers weren't slipping, they would be perfectly content to keep on their path of greed and destruction.

How about getting on the offensive and DOING something? Why just TALK about things???

20. Not sure how many jobs but
another post here showed the new number - 9.1 percent. NINE-point-one. We're up to NINE, george. Care to try for 10? I think that's where the numbers were when we threw your father out of the White House...

Not sure how many soldiers because the numbers of dead may not tell the whole tale and too few in the media are making enough of a stink about it. Never mind the number of civilian casualties. We can only GUESS at that. And how 'bout the wounded? Coming home under cover of darkness in filled-to-the-brim transport planes, spilling over from hospitals to hotels. Press not covering, or not allowed to cover. Supposed to be in the high four-digits.

17. but but but...
"George H.W. Bush was behind Michael Dukakis by 19 points in May of 1988. Reagan was behind Walter Mondale in the spring of 1984. There are cycles in a presidency. George W. Bush has had a longer period of positive support than any president in modern history," said.

Funny, Newt doesn't mention that he's also dropped more in the polls than any other president in modern history.

18. I wonder if they would ever think about dumping him? Maybe he would go.
I am pretty sure they are seeing some really bad numbers and the future looks even more dismal. He has had more than his 15 minutes of fame - even his mother said that she never thought he would amount to anything or words to that effect.
I bet Crawford is looking more and more desireable as time goes by as he seems to hate Washington and the press these days - especially the increasing criticism which he loathes as he has been surrounded by sycophants all his life.
His dad was like that, too, as I recall an interview some woman reporter held with him when he was president and he was all charm and smiles when the questions were easy but when she asked one critical one she said his demeaner totally changed and his eyes became cold as ice, the interview rapport changed entirely and after that he became very testy and soon ended it - quite chilling, according to her, but quite telling about the thin-skinned Bush men.

22. I like how the republican talk about cycle using examples of
Reagan/Mondale and Bush 1/Dukakis.Do they serious believe the American people are dumb enough to buy this spin. The dynamics are starkly different this year. This Quack in Iraq is sending people home maimed and dead. The worse this situation gets and the stubborness of this president are the main reasons for their decline in polls. These men and women in the armed forces have families, they are all affected by this blunder of a war.The United States is much weaker today that it was before the supreme court appointed Bush president. The main failure of this president is by going into Iraq,he exposed the pitfalls of modern war.Our position to use our supreior military as a deterrent has been comprimised, and our vunreabilities have been exposed.Add this to the lies that have been told to the American people and our soliders Bush has attacked the spirt of the American people. The Republicans have not only waged war on Iraq and Afganistan, they have waged war on anybody who does not agree with them. This includes American citizens, friendly neihboring countries,Canada and Mexico also many of our allies around the world.Mr.President democracy dosen't work this way.You have shown America your Texas style leadership an you know what. Most of Americans and about all of the rest of the world think it sucks. The people who disagree with you are not the enemy, nations that don't agree with you are not the enemy,no sir, moderate republican, independents,Democrats,Canada,Mexico,Germany,France, and so on and so on they are not the problem, you Mr.Bush, are the problem and you still don't get it.

21. fellow Republicans are UNEASY???
about the economy, budget deficits, Iraq????

One of these days they're going to have to wake up and realize that THEY participated in all the policies that made their current "unease" possible.

Frankly, I think Dems ought to get out there and get some people running a every single Congressioal race everywhere. I sense some BIG coattails coming up for the Dem nominee. But you gotta have candidates to take advantage of that.

23. Yeah, they're "uneasy" about the friggin' POLL NUMBERS!!!
I guess they aren't that upset yet about what's driving those poll numbers - the NINE-point-one unemployment rate. The 87 billion dollar demand for propping up the Iraq war. Our exponentially increasing budget deficit. Our factory closures. Our majorly compromised image in the world. All the damage that's been done. All the lives lost. And because of the air quality lies in New York, AND the depleted uranium in Iraq, it now starts to look as though all those who were killed - were the lucky ones.

And the rethugs are starting to worry about their POLL NUMBERS!!!

25. My take: recall partly responsible.
The CA recall has sucked up the national political news to an extent. I think that this in part has taken Bush's ability away to get the media to shill for him. Most commentators thought it was good because it kept his opponents in the primary out of the spotlight, but in reality that may be good for us after all!
