Britain, US shelve report on Iraq banned weapons report
Britain, US shelve report on Iraq banned weapons report
www.chinaview.cn 2003-09-14 17:02

LONDON, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Britain and the United States have decided to delay the publication of a full report on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction after inspectors found no evidence that any such weapons exist in the country, the British Sunday Times newspaper reported on Sunday.

Efforts by the Iraq Survey Group, an Anglo-American team of 1,400 scientists, military and intelligence experts, to scour Iraq for the past four months to uncover evidence of chemical and biological weapons have so far ended in failure, the paper said.

It has been expected that a progress report would be published Monday, the paper said, but some British lawmakers on the parliamentary security and intelligence committee have been told that this has been delayed and no new date set.

The paper also said British defense intelligence sources confirmed last week that the final report, due to be submitted by David Kay, the survey group's leader, to George Tenet, head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), had been delayed and may not necessarily even be published.

12. Yeah, wasn't Kay supposed to be about to unleash findings
that would blow all us "where are the WMDs" people out of the water? Wasn't that supposed to be one of their "October Surprises" - or maybe rather "September Surprises?"

Oh my. This is getting interesting. Kay failed to deliver? THey were putting a lot of weight on what he was expected to find. I'd read about it and was bracing myself. This is most intriguing...

16. Wish I could agree...
but I fear the numbers may have shown that too few in the US care anymore whether there were or were not WMDs, so why put a stick in that wasp's nest when you don't have to by pretending that WMD paperwork constituted a threat.

The White House may have decided, based on numbers showing that Americans a) don't care, or b) erroneously believe WMDs have already been found , that their lies have sold well, so why fool around with success.

2. Mainstream press will probably pick this up.
Many people have been waiting for this report, on both sides. Some Freepers at another website I recently stopped attending had said they were holding off on judgement of Bush until the report came back, Well this is the report and it looks like Bush is going to try and sweep it under the rug.

4. So we spent $87 billion for nothing?
Could we have spent that money on something like free public health care for everyone, and perhaps free college educations for everyone who wanted one?

6. That $87 billion...
... is just the next installment. We've already spent $50-60 billion to prepare for and execute the invasion, and over $4 billion a month from May until now.

We don't have much to show for the money, but some people have benefitted... Cheney's still getting his million a year from Halliburton, is he not?

Cheers.

10. NO. We spent 161 million for nothing
The 87 billion is just an additional amount to get us through the rest of this year.

9. Wait just a minute here
As I was flipping through my three rabbit ear channels, I just heard Brit Hume on Faux saying that the "only people" who suggest that we went to Iraq for oil were "al jazeera".

Why can't we all be blind sheep and just allow George the Conquerette
to keep his supporter's SUV's filled with gasoline cheaply.

I, for one, am sick and tired of all this bashing of our duly selected leader who is just trying to liberate an oppressed people of all that polluting oil in their ground. Those who say our leader doesn't care about the environment have their eyes closed. In 40 to fifty years, all that polluting oil will be removed from Iraq and the Iraqi's won't have to worry about the petroleum bubbling up from the ground and destroying their drinking water.

11. Link to the original Sunday Times article
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-816274,00.html

but I'm not sure if non-UK people can view it without a subscription, so a bit more of a quote:
"In July Kay suggested on US television that he had seen enough evidence to convince himself that Saddam Hussein had had a programme to produce weapons of mass destruction. He expected to find “strong” evidence of missile delivery systems and “probably” evidence of biological weapons.

But last week British officials said they believed Kay had been “kite-flying” and that no hard evidence had been uncovered.

The hunt for weapons is seen in London and Washington as a vital step in convincing an increasingly sceptical public that the war was justified. There have already been false alarms. One early suggestion, by Downing Street and the White House, was that an unmanned plane found by UN inspectors could have been used to spray chemical weapons. But a US air force report leaked yesterday said such drones were primarily used for reconnaissance."

13. Methinks Kay doesn't want to go down for bush*
Kay sees the writing on the wall, why should he lose the little
credibility he has left by putting out more bogus WMD propaganda.

15. Kay's got a high-paying job at SAIC
I'm sure he's not worried about a thing.

And Kay's a CIA guy. Has anyone contemplated the possibility that the failure to produce this report is deliberate payback on the part of the CIA to the Bush administration and Rummie?

14. new doubts on Blair's Iraq dossier
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/politics/story/0,6903,1041796,00.html

Dramatic new evidence from the intelligence services casts fresh doubts over Tony Blair's central claim that Iraq continued to produce chemical and biological weapons until the outbreak of war, The Observer can reveal.
Newly disclosed Cabinet Office documents show that the Prime Minister's categorical assertion was based only on a single source and was attacked as 'too strong' by a senior intelligence official. The same official attacks the dossier's descriptions of the graphic effects of mustard gas and VX, a nerve agent, as 'grossly misleading'.

The production claim, which remained in the dossier despite warnings from experts, was repeated in Blair's foreword to the dossier and, more crucially, in the key Commons debate on 24 September last year after the dossier was published.

He told Parliament: ' concludes that Iraq has chemical and biological weapons that Saddam has continued to produce them.'

17. Does anyone remember in late May (I believe) when it was anounced that US
was going to stop looking for weapons because they had more important things to do.

I don't know where they got that "scour" notion in that one paragraph, but there's no report because the US hasn't bothered to do any searching. If they searched and didn't find anything, they could at least report on that (and I know that's the claim the article makes, but I don't believe it).

19. I remember hearing that this report would "Shock and awe" people
Not only did they use the same corny-ass phrase again they just knew that Chalabi and the others who hadn't been there in 20 years were right, or at least the OSP were sure they were right.

It ain't bragging if you've done it but if you have done it yet

SHUT THE F**K UP!
