Public Says $87 Billion Too Much

By Richard Morin and Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, September 14, 2003; Page A01

A majority of Americans disapprove of President Bush's request to Congress for an additional $87 billion to fund military and reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan over the next year, amid growing doubts about the administration's policies at home and abroad, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Six in 10 Americans said they do not support the proposal, which the president announced in his nationally televised address last Sunday night. That marks the most significant public rejection of a Bush initiative on national security or terrorism since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In a second rebuff to the administration, more Americans said that, if Congress decides to approve the additional money, lawmakers should roll back the president's tax cuts to pay for the increased spending, rather than add to the federal budget deficit or cut government spending.

A govt. by the sheeple...for the sheeple. Will the house and senate listen to the "people" this time?

I say give them the moeny to rebuild water/electricity ...bring in UN troops...and bring our soldiers home.

8. once again, the dems miscalculate
They always seem to be underestimating the strength of their position with the general public.

As soon as Bush announced the $87B figure, didn't we see Dem after Dem get on tv and say, it's an awful lot, he's gonna have to answer some questions, but he'll get it in the end b/c we have to support our troops (by undermining the domestic programs and the economy at home, etc.)

In fact, the majority of Americans oppose this kind of astronomical figure. And the Dems shouldn't have been so afraid of being painted as failing to support the troops by expressing more opposition to this number.

13. And wait til it starts setting in that Cheney's now saying we need more.
Apparently it happened on one of the Sunday talk shows - Meet the Press I think. He said the 87 billion wouldn't be enough and that we'd need more. Wonder how THAT'll go over with the voters.

The other cool thing about this was, if you'll remember the last bushies, what too many people say did Daddy in was "read my lips, no new taxes." Like his lovely record on the economy mattered not. Well, well, well. NOW, junior will have his own junior version of that if they start rolling back the tax cuts.

This doesn't look too great for young george.
