Gay Students Being Left Behind Study Shows
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/01/010605schools.htm

A national study of schools shows that 95 percent have little or no gay, lesbian or bisexual resources in their counseling services and only one percent have transgender resource.

The National Schools Assessment is the result of a yearlong examination of the nation's schools and how they deal with LGBT students. It was undertaken in January 2004 by PFLAG, Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and researchers at the University of Maryland.

The results, released Thursday, show schools are not responding to the needs of gay students.

10. Currently,
just my professional opinion, schools are not responding to the needs of any students.

For those needs that we can identify and do something about, there are no resources; so it doesn't happen. And more budget cuts are on the way. In elementary school, LGBT issues just don't come up. If they are there, they are deeply in the closet. No one is getting counseling, and bullying of any sort is getting worse. We are overcrowded and understaffed, and even the "regular" procedures for bullying have gone by the wayside.

In this climate, I can guess where the needs of gay students will fall on the priority list.

If we could redirect our focus on public ed: from testing, blaming and punishing, and cutting funding, to actually focus on, and fund, safe, nurturing, supportive environments with rich resources available to help any child who is having problems for any reason, I'd feel a lot better about going to work every day. <sigh>
