POT SMOKING TO BE MADE LEGAL - UK
SMOKING cannabis will no longer be against the law under new Government plans.

From January, recreational users of the drug will be free from prosecution, unless they are pushers, it emerged yesterday.

Cannabis will be downgraded to a Class C drug - although people smoking near schools and playgrounds will face arrest and have the cannabis confiscated.

No further action will be taken unless there are complaints from locals, evidence of repeated possession or the smoking is in public.

Could this have anything to do with Blair's approval ratings?

1. Slightly disingenuous headline.
Smoking pot will still be illegal but the punishment will be a slap on the wrist.

And I can't see that this has anything to do with Blairs approval ratings. This was enacted by the Home Secretary David Blunkett ages ago.

2. It's actually shite
The new legislation is a bit of a nightmare. The police can in fact arrest you. They may just choose not to. What constitutes close to a school?

5. They should allow growing
for personal use, e.g 2 or 3 plants as is allowed in holland (I think its holland).

Ironic to post this on a US board where simply having a bong means you can be arrested. Sorry US chums, hope the tide starts to turn some time...

9. Great. It allows the police to selectively arrest you
Fucking great. No equality under the law.

4. One thing is certain: it will piss off John Ashcroft.
And that is always a good thing (if you are safely harbored in another country, mind you).

10. regime Change
in UK and Canada those terra-lovin' pinkos are tryin' to decriminalize pot in their own countries! who do they think they are? After all they KNOW the US Government thinks pot smokers belong in jail and freedom means responsibility, the repsonsibility to fall in line with US policy. To do anything else to is to give aid and comfort to the terrists.

6. This sounds like Prohibition, where they went after the "producers"
The stills and rum runners were villified, as if the consumers had nothing to do with the situation.

7. Just a pipe dream
conjured up by Peter Mandelson in his latest bid to make Labour appealing to the under 18s, ahead of the next general election. Or maybe Blair Junior has been busted again.

12. Seriously? You'd be forking out about $250 per ounce for
a decent puff but needing to have your bronchial tract re lined every six months or so

14. The creme de la creme comes hermetically sealed in
'HM Government: National Poisons Unit' packets with Customs & Excise sticker saying "Police Evidence: Do Not Destroy". Downside is, it smells like the next door's cat has urinated on it just at the floresecent stage.

19. Yeah, what kind of a Mussolini is he, anyway?
Herr Bushler would be displeased at his behaving like a liberal democracy, even for a moment.
