Bush Biking, Relaxing at Ranch
By Deb Riechmann -- Associated Press
Tuesday, December 28, 2004

----
CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - Besides monitoring the devastating earthquake in Southeast Asia, President Bush is biking and strolling around his ranch here and pondering tax reform and other goals in his second term.
"He's clearing some brush this morning," deputy White House press secretary Trent Duffy said Tuesday, adding that the president and first lady also planned to host friends at the ranch.
"He's doing some biking and exercising as he normally does, taking walks with the first lady, and thinking about what he wants to accomplish in the second term."
(...)
Tax experts say Bush's plans to reform taxes likely will involve small changes to the current system rather than a sweeping effort to scrap the income tax for a radically new approach, such as a national sales tax.
The changes Bush is expected to propose still are expected to generate opposition, especially if he suggests eliminating favored tax breaks, such as the deduction for state income tax payments.
Tax experts in close contact with the administration say signs are pointing toward a plan that will seek to improve the income tax code, rather than replace it with a single-rate flat tax with no deductions, a national sales tax or Value Added Tax - ideas that gained prominence among conservative Republicans in the 1990s.

why doesn't he go clear some brush in Asia?

Maybe it would be 'hard work', eh???

I was just saying the exact some thing out loud to my husband. We were cracking up and wondering if Bush is looking for another photo op!

Did you see that absurd Diane Sawyer interview with Kerry where she held up a picture of Kerry windsurfing next to Bush, you guessed it, clearing brush, and said "Are you worried that the American people will see these two photos and "identify with Bush's rugged masculinity better?"
(Paraphrased)

And Kerry looked at her like she was nuts and said something along the lines of "I'm sure the American people have more on their minds than obsessing over a man getting a few hours of exercise. Also, I clear brush too, but I don't ask a camera crew to follow me around snapping pictures while I do it!"

It was SO GD FUNNY.

69. What does he need to clear brush for?
Reagan cleared brush, hoever, he had horses. pastures and fencelines had to be maintained. What exactly is it that Bush ranches? Are there cattle or other livestock or are there row crops or grain/grasses? I've never seen any photos of farm or agricultural equipment. And, of course, absolutely no horses.

41. A truly global disaster
As of this writing 800 Norwegians are missing, the majority from Kaho Lak. 1500 Swedes are also missing. The total fugues are going to be devastating.

I can only speak for Norway, but if these numbers don't get down, it will be the worst disaster affecting Norway since WWII. I would imagine the same would be true for Sweden, Finland, France and a bunch of other western nations too.

I live in Oslo, Norway and in the last two days I've had three different encounters with the disaster:

1. My brother and his girlfriend was traveling in Myanmar. They were not affected, but the beach resort were they spent Christmas is probably gone by now. We had two days of hell before we heard from them.

2. My grandmothers neighbors spent their Christmas vacation in Thailand (unknown resort). Nobody has heard from them since Christmas day (two parents and a tree year old girl)

3. A close relative of my own neighbor, a fifteen year old boy was in Puchet when the disaster struck. He got lucky, but the experience got to him. He returned to Norway today and was immediately committed to hospital suffering from severe shock.

As we speak, tens if not hundreds of thousands of relatives across the globe are praying for their loved ones. And all we can do is hope. I my self was lucky, my brother was OK, but I feel for all the others that still live in fear...

How many americans are missing? And what, if anything, is Bush doing to help them?

Bush is vacationing. Maybe when Bush finishes vacationing he will do something to help missing Americans. He vacationed before 9/11, too. Vacationing is what he does best. Last I heard, 68,000 are dead. But Bush continues his vacation.

Welcome to DU, Nordic65. :hi:

And the White House is saying that this week is "normally a 'down time' for the President, and so you shouldn't expect such a statement."

Umm, I guess 50,000 killed isn't enough to interrupt Bush's precious vacation time for a 5 minute public statement?

Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 05:25 PM by diamond14
since bush* went on vacation....at least we worked hard to get the valued rummy signature on the letters for the DEAD soldiers' families...no more 'stamped' signatures....progress...

and Colin Powell got out there to say 'we're NOT stingy..."

the little bush* get-together with FRIENDS down there is likely the meeting for the BIG payback to donors....wonder if kenny lay is there?

hey bush*: where is 'dead or alive" osama bin laden, the murderer of over 3000 American Citizens on our own soil?????

and where is the anthrax killer, the bioterrorist who KILLED Federal Employees and attempted-to-kill United States Senators and representatives?????

and did you know that KURDS are being executed by Iraqi forces that YOU decided to trained and armed? KURDS are fleeing for their lives in northern Iraq????

IMO, bush* hides at the pig farm to do the real nixonian dirty deals with his reTHUGlican "friends", the war-profiteers....also, to drink and drug...which is why bush* can't come out and speak to the press...I remember nixon, near the end, when nixon got on National TV, slobbering DRUNK...many Americans were truly SHOCKED !

Besides monitoring the devastating earthquake in Southeast Asia, President Bush is biking and strolling around his ranch here and pondering tax reform and other goals in his second term.

Yeah, right.

I think she wrote it exactly how it was told to her. Any pictures with the script?

On second thought ... was this piece really about what 'the myth' was doing or was it just advance work repeating stuff about the tax plans???

53. That moron * better keep his getting rid of middle class deductions to
himself. The reason I pay such high property and state taxes is because we are giving all of our revenues to the red states and getting little in return. We need to pay for roads and schools in the blue states some how. He does this I say succession, let the red states pay for their own darn roads and schools like people in NJ and other blue states have to.

66. C'mon People
Give Mr Bush a break. He finally managed to work out how to switch his PS2 on (thanks Santy), he's spent the best part of a couple of days getting to grips with his dance mat, and you expect him to haul his ass in front of a camera to make a statement on the worst single disaster in living memory?

74. It's frightening
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 10:24 AM by HannibalBarca
I was on that infamous website freerepublic and they seem to obtain psychological reinforcement by posting pictures of Shrub in macho poses, one in particular had him carrying an axe and they were all in awe at their great man's man of a leader. Rarely in history have I seen such a disparity between reality and perception.

84. Don't fall for the "Lazy Bush on Vacation" crap
He goes to Crawford when he needs to do his filthiest plotting, far away from the multitude of eyes in the Capitol. His house in Crawford is "safe" -- not bugged; communications cannot be intercepted.

The "clearing brush" is bullshit -- yet another red herring.

There *is* a method to his madness is failing to address this most horrific natural disaster; sadly, it is a devious one. He and his NeoCon pals are playing at the Big Game with this one. Of course, what they fail to comprehend is that all their plotting has done NOTHING but make the world a worse and far less safe place to live.

Whatever these pigs are up to, the sad truth is that his lack of action following this disaster will cause rage to reverberate around the globe against us. Truly, yet again he has shown himself to be utterly devoid of compassion and the desire for peace.

Expect some significant NEGATIVE developments in January, and really exploding in February.....till Impeachment Day.
