By ALI AHMED
Associated Press Writer

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP) - U.S. soldiers mistakenly killed 11 Iraqi police officers Friday as they chased a car full of highway bandits toward an American checkpoint in a small town west of Fallujah, witnesses said.

The U.S. military in Baghdad said it had no information on the incident.

... Fallujah police were chasing a white BMW without license plates that they identified as one used by highway bandits on the road connecting Baghdad with the Jordanian border. The officers chasing the four men in the BMW were in pickup trucks.

U.S. Army troops manning a checkpoint on a road leading to the resort village of Saddamiyat al-fallujah, formerly used by senior officials of the Saddam regime, opened fire on the BMW and the trucks when they did not stop.

Witnesses said 11 police officers and all four men in the car were killed in the hail of fire.

3. Bush has destroyed America for at least 20 years. Terroists and snipers
are going to be gunning for us for 20 years. And for someone who loves travelling the world and meeting all the friendly people in other cultures, it just makes me sick!

Our only hope is to arrest Bush and The Family and try/convict them of Crimes Against Humanity. Then maybe we can make peace with the world.

That will be a great step toward the USA rehabilitation. To arrest Bush and The Familly would be a greater step... But don't dream !

8. This is being covered on CNN right now...
Their correspondent says that the Iraqi police were chasing the suspects when they were inadvertently fired upon by US soldiers. CNN says the number of policeman killed cannot be confirmed yet.

Nic Robertson is on his way there now, and will file a report from the scene.

14. Geniuses who designed the checkpoints should be court-martialed
I saw one "checkpoint" on the news that didn't really appear to be clearly marked (didn't see any signs or advance notice on the ground). The troops were shouting "stop!" (as if all Iraqis spoke English) to people *inside* a car coming toward them. When the clueless Iraqis didn't stop the troops lit the car up with rifle and machine gun fire.

Sounds like the same scenario here.

I don't blame the young troops...they have enough to worry about as it is...I blame the folks giving the orders (yeah that starts with the "Commander" in Chief).

Could Halliburton share a small part of the $87 Billion to go for emergency lights for the pick up trucks used by the Iraqi police force?

Do the Military police share radios/satellite telphones with the Iraqi police force, or is the problem that they do but the MP's just not have any linguists?

43. Reuters reported the Centcom numbers and Iraq bodycount numbers
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 11:23 AM by Billy_Pilgrim
I don't have the link but I archived the page and:

<snip>
Following is a table of military casualties suffered by U.S., British and multinational forces, as well as Iraqis, during the war as announced by U.S., British and Iraqi authorities or independently confirmed by Reuters correspondents.

NOTE: The figures in brackets refer to casualties after May 1, when U.S. President George W. Bush declared major combat over.

U.S., BRITISH, AND MULTINATIONAL TROOPS KILLED:

COMBAT/ATTACKS

United States 195 (64)

Britain 15 (7)

Multinational 0 (1)

NON-COMBAT

United States 94 (72)

Britain 30 (5)

Multinational

IRAQIS KILLED:

MILITARY 2,320#

CIVILIANS Between 6,113 and 7,830*

# = U.S. military estimates relating only to fighting in or near Baghdad. No other figures available.

* = Figure compiled on Web site www.iraqbodycount.net, run by academics and peace activists, based on incidents reported by at least two media sources.

NOTE: NON-COMBAT is defined as accidents, U.S. or British fire killing or wounding their own troops, and other incidents unrelated to fighting.
<snip>

Feel safe.
Ashcroft watches over us all.

On edit, these figures are about three days old and don't include the Iraqi policemen that have been killed.
