Time (magazine) names President Bush Person of the Year
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 09:18 AM by Cooley Hurd
:grr:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/12/19/time.moy.bush.reut/index.html

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- U.S. President George W. Bush's bold, uncompromising leadership and his clear-cut election victory made him Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2004, its managing editor said Sunday.

Time chose Bush "for sticking to his guns (literally and figuratively), for reshaping the rules of politics to fit his 10-gallon-hat leadership style and for persuading a majority of voters this time around that he deserved to be in the White House for another four years," Jim Kelly wrote in the magazine.

Bush was also Time's choice to appear on the cover in 2000 after winning the presidential election despite losing the popular vote.

His father, President George H. W. Bush, was named "Man of the Year" in 1990 for what Time called his mastery of foreign policy and his wavering domestic record.

Last year the magazine picked "The American Soldier."
</snip>

:wtf: "...bold, uncompromising leadership and his clear-cut election victory????" In what alternative dimension is this TRUE????

I fucking HATE Time Magazine!

It is given to the person who dominated news.

how could Shrub win MOY when he wasn't even on the short list? That's right...same way he won Ohio! Forgot.

All I can say is OMG...and LOL simultaneously! "Clear victory"??, my butt! This is the print media version of those Clear Channel "Our Leader" billboards. Question is: On the cover, will he be wearin' his cute 'little' military jacket? And darlin', cut the 'meds' (which of course you're not taking)...your face is lookin' soooo puffy!

I'm serious. EVERYBODY DO THIS ACROSS THE COUNTRY! That's called 'Proper-ganda' to fight the propaganda we live in.

I walked into a supermarket that had *'s face on Newsweek magazine at every checkout stand after Nov 2.

Without even hesitating I took out my black magic marker and put an Adolph moustache on every single cover and no one said a word to me.

Then I did my shopping as if nothing unusual had happened.

Have the courage to maybe buy a few magazines if you get hassled.
It's worth the truth-in-advertising moment offered to us by Time.

Laziness wins out. It was easy to pick him for this award. However if Time magazine would have done a little work, they should have picked the U.S. Military or even the 9-11 commission. This is not a surprise, this is a lazy minded country. Greed, lying and cheater are always celebrated.

84. Because Time sucks, literally...
I remember when the Clenis was the news of the week. For some reason, we had a free subscription to Time. EVERY week there was a cover story on the blowjob. EVERY week!
We began to call the magazine "Blow-Job Weekly". We had to get rid of it before the kids came home from school.
Then came the happy day when their "Special Edition: ALL BLOW-JOB SPECIAL" came out. Really.
That was it for Time magazine. I'll stick with Newsweek, thankyou.

118. Be as blunt as possible
Use the proverbial 2x4. I had to tell them point-blank that I did not like their magazine; I could get my weekly news roundup with half the verbiage in Newsweek; and nothing they could say, do, or promise would ever get me to resubscribe in this lifetime. They finally quit calling.

I think this Person of the Year choice would be a great way to let Time know -- by letters to the editor, cancelled subscriptions, what-have-you -- that this "mandate" of his is bullshit.

I have disagreed with many of Time's choices in the past, but accepted them as mere difference of opinion. This year, though, time is spotlighting the wrong man. If we have to recognize this administration, Karl Rove should be the Person of the Year. Why honor the puppet when you could honor the puppeteer?

But really, at the end of the day, who cares what Time thinks, other than Time itself?

60. Time magazine was Henry Luce's baby
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 11:44 AM by suegeo
And Luce was the Yale Alum. that named the last century "The American Century."

And now we have Time naming the stooge of the Project for the New American Century (Bush the lesser) as their man of the year, for his "clear cut election victory."

The powers that be really, (really!) don't like us, the members of the great unwashed. And they apparently have not liked us for quite some time.

A clear cut victory, my ass.

On Edit:
http://www.time-planner.com/planner/about_time/bios/founders/henry_luce.html

"Luce often spoke of the countless nights he spent at Camp Jackson in South Carolina with Hadden discussing journalism and the need for a new kind of newspaper or magazine to help educate a misinformed populace."

AND

“In an age when people are bombarded by information, we are, ironically, becoming less informed. TIME is dedicated to keeping busy men and women well informed by making information more readily accessible.”

--Founder and Managing Editor Henry Luce, 1923

Bold uncompromisingly following the orders of his neo con handlers. Google

"loves" our troops is that why he sent them into a no win war where they are
nothing more than targets.

As for winning the election....... I live in Ohio I saw election fraud and theft first hand.

I've read this sentence at least ten times and still don't get it:

"President George H. W. Bush, was named "Man of the Year" in 1990 for what Time called his mastery of foreign policy and his wavering domestic record."

You get an award for wavering domestic record? :scratchinghead:

Who cares what Time Magazine does?

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

If being a narrow-minded jerk who's responsible for the deaths of thousands, thinks God speaks to him, gives money to the rich and takes from the poor, etc. is leadership, then I guess Bush is a leader. Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 11:10 AM by LibDemAlways
They left out the "no cattle" part. We have our work cut out for us this week. Every supermarket check-out magazine display and drugstore magazine rack -- not to mention corner newsstands and big bookstore chains -- will have the chimp's ugly mug prominently on display with the "Man of the Year" Cover. Turn them over. Hide them behind Modern Bride. Hell, take a stack and stick them behind the Depends Undergarments in the drugstore or behind the books in some obscure corner of the bookstore. In short, suppress sales. Time is Media Whore of the Year. I don't think this issue will be a big seller to begin with, but with a little creativity and "re-arranging the shelves," we can help make it the poorest selling Man of the Year Cover ever.

63. They're a little bit circumscribed with their description of him, however
'the magazine's editors tapped Bush "for sharpening the debate until the choices bled, for reframing reality to match his design, for gambling his fortunes — and ours — on his faith in the power of leadership."

Seems a little shaded to me.

65. Cancelled my subscription:
To Whom it May Concern:

I have just cancelled my subscription to your magazine due to your choice of George W. Bush as "Man of the Year". I had always thought of "Time" as a source of unbiased news, but it would appear that you too have become part of the right wing media machine.

How you could choose a man who has caused so much damage to our country, and who will almost certainly go down as the worst president in the history of this country is beyond me.

I have lost all respect for your magazine, and no longer consider it a source of news. I cannot and will not subscribe to a magazine that honors a man who has been responsible for so many unneccesary deaths, so much destruction, and so much hate across the world. This is truly a sad day, and you should be ashamed. I will NEVER buy or read your magazine again. I understand Hitler, and possibly Stalin were previous choices of yours, so perhaps it is fitting with whatever criteria you use, but I am ASHAMED to be a subscriber, thus I no longer am. This literally sickens me.

177. I am disgusted and disappointed...a semi permanent condition!
I see no honor for a man who has divided the country he is supposed to be leading, alienated 99% of the rest of the world, and been responsible for the deaths of thousands of human beings. This choice is a disgrace, not a smart decision. TIME should have avoided the obvious polarity this will cause. We are already divided, and they are being cavalier with our feelings and disregarding our opinions.
The irony is, I doubt they will lose money over this issue. nor do I think they "care"...this will, ultimately, generate some "fabulous" Letters to the Editor. (which you can also do on that first link under the Poll)

This poll results are at almost Midnight, PST.

Time debates the person of the year

SNIP

Time held a lunch Tuesday for about 100 journalists, advertisers and dignitaries in its New York offices. A panel consisting of 2002 co-person of the year Coleen Rowley ("The Whistleblowers"), Brian Williams of NBC News, former presidential candidate the Rev. Al Sharpton, and journalists Alessandra Stanley and Andrew Sullivan debated various choices for the honor.

Based on the enthusiasm expressed at the lunch for each nominee, it would seem that the frontrunners, for now, are President Bush, Bush campaign strategist Karl Rove, God and Jesus Christ.

"God is a very provocative choice because it does raise a number of theological issues," Kelly said. "Maybe we'd have to call the issue 'The Deity of the Year.' "

Of course, choosing God over Jesus -- or vice versa -- would cause a stir.

"If I had to choose between God and Jesus, I would go for the Holy Ghost," Kelly quipped.

147. Two other contenders were Michael Moore and . . . Mel Gibson!
It was on NBC's NYC Sunday night news show. I don't know who else was considered, but remember that Person of the Year isn't necessarily a compliment, only that that person was judged the most influential in affecting the outcome of events for the world in a particular year.

I'm fairly sure that if Kerry had won, Michael Moore would have been a virtual shoo-in.

If anyone knows of a stargate to an alternate universe that I can slip through and never return, that has Kerry winning the presidency and Michael Moore on Time's Person of the Year cover, please don't keep it to yourself.

Actually two subscriptions, one for me and one for my student daughter. The lady operator was very careful to write down my reasons exactly as I stated them. I also told her that I will tell everybody I know to cancel theirs.
I hope they will lose a lot of money over this one.

111. I Agree with Time
The CNN article was less detailed than the one I read on Yahoo. I didn't get the feeling that Time selected Bush because they wanted to whore for him. Bush was the man this year because soooooo many people hate him with a passion, yet he's still in power. I hate that his stupid face will be on the cover for any reason, but I don't blame Time for choosing him. They don't pick the "best" person of the year. Just the most influencial (good or bad).

From the Yahoo Article:
<snip>

The election was about the use of American influence," Bush said.

After a grueling campaign, Bush remains a polarizing figure in America and around the world, and that's part of the reason he earned the magazine's honor, said Managing Editor Jim Kelly.

"Many, many Americans deeply wish he had not won," Kelly said in a telephone interview. "And yet he did."

In the Time article, Bush said he relishes that some people dislike him.

"I think the natural instinct for most people in the political world is that they want people to like them," Bush said. "On the other hand, I think sometimes I take kind of a delight in who the critics are."

<snip>

Bush certainly fits this catagory - and is in good keeping with former "person of the year" from years gone by - people such as Hitler and Saddam.

Edit: my mistake - Saddam was only a finalist - Hitler was man of the year for 1938.

Dear Reader:

We regret your disappointment over the selection of President Bush as
TIME's Person of the Year. But perhaps we should remind you of the
traditional standard by which the editors make their annual choice.
The Person of the Year is not an award or a tribute. The question at
the center of the selection process is, Who or what, for better or
worse, has affected the way we live today? The answer to that
question could be a positive force (for example, Winston Churchill,
Man of the Year, 1940; Dwight Eisenhower, 1944) or a negative force
(Adolf Hitler, Man of the Year, 1939; Ayatullah Khomeini, 1979). As
for our selection of President George W. Bush for 2004 -- there is
no one else whose agenda and actions in the past year had such
universal impact. As managing editor Jim Kelly noted in his Letter
From the Editor, Bush has had his highs and lows over the past four
years, but in the end he prevailed in the 2004 election by
"persuading a majority of voters this time around that he deserved to
be in the White House for another four years."

Thank you for writing. We appreciated having the opportunity to
respond to your concerns.

Best wishes.

138. Sixty six years from Hitler to Bush as Man of the Year
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 06:51 PM by jody
For Man of the Year for 1938, Time Magazine chose Adolf Hitler -- Führer of the German people, Commander-in-Chief of the German military, and Chancellor of the Third Reich. Sixty-six years later for Man of the Year for 2004, Time chose George W. Bush -- leader of the U.S. people, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. military, and President of the U.S. Each leader set out to establish a New World Order and each saw its homeland devastated by economic depression, persecution of a religious minority, and military failures following preemptive invasions of other countries. Will future historians uncover other similarities?

EDIT TO ADD
Ian Kershaw, a highly respected historian, wrote that Adolf Hitler believed God had chosen him to lead Germany into its proper place as a world power. Many Germans became fanatical devotees of the "Fuhrer Cult" however, that changed as more and more people realized that Hitler was lying to them about the war and the economy.

Kershaw quoted one opinion circa 1944, "It's always claimed that the Fuhrer has been sent to us from God. I don't doubt it. The Fuhrer was sent to us from God, through not in order to save Germany, but to ruin it. Providence has determined the destruction of the German people, and Hitler is the executor of this will."

They need you account number which appears directly above your name - in my case 11 #'s the acct. # was. i.e. 1234 456 7890. I typed this in along with my zip code and cancel it, you see the option to "cancel subscription" on the left hand side in a column.

It asked me if I wanted to cancel at once or wait until the end of the subscription period. I clicked on "cancel at once".

Over here in Oz we tend to call the Iraqi insurgent either a guerilla or freedom fighter. Like Osama Bin Laden losing out to what was the mayor called in 2001, the Iraqi guerilla has lost out to what's that idiot that runs the world war machine in 2004. However the rest of the world is quietly confident that the Iraqi Guerilla will lift his/her game in 2005 and bounce back to take the US mainstrem media's top accolade!!!

MSM is utterly complicit with this utterly corrupt and utterly evil regime.

How so? Let's start with the stealing and cover-up of at least two presidential elections, with the disseminating and acceptance of hundreds of lies that led to two immoral and illegal wars, with the constant Democrat/liberal agenda and Dem candidate bashing of at least the past decade.

Let's see, anything I've left out? Oh yes, in the cover-up of the real truth behind that horrible day three years ago, an event which completely reversed the downward popularity spiral of the self-same fascist regime...

Before the election all the polls showed Kerry almost a two to one favorite. I'm still having a hard time dealing with that one.

194. Actually it is very appropriate
Time's criteria:

“the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse"

No one can deny that Bush has been one person on the planet that has most affected our lives for ill.

195. Letter to TIME: Next year is our turn!!!
My letter to Time magazine today:
I have been reading Time for 50 years. I disagree with your choice of
George W. Bush for Person of the Year, but I am not taken aback (after
all, Hitler was once Time's Man of the Year). In their article "George
W. Bush", Nancy Gibbs and John F. Dickerson state that "It may be that
a peculiar chemistry of skills and instincts and circumstances gave Bush
his victory in a way no future candidates can copy. But that doesn't
mean they won't try." This "peculiar chemistry" seems to have included
fraud and vote tampering by his supporters (in Ohio, Florida, New
Mexico, and other states). You're probably right that others will try
to copy this to try to win the presidency, but I would hope that they do
not succeed.
Also you have an article about right-wing blogs entitled "Blogs Have
Their Day" by Lev Grossman. It is of course presumptuous of Grossman to
state: "When you read Power Line, you feel as if you're part of a
community, a like-minded righteous few." That community is not ours,
never will be. I believe that within the next month we on the Internet
who have been investigating the rampant fraud and vote tampering will
"Have our Years" when the scandal is finally brought out and prosecuted.
Chris Taylor states in "10 Things We Learned About Blogs" that "Bloggers
Keep News Alive"; he cites dailyKos.com (talking the strange box on
Bush's back in the debate); and still I have not found a word about J.
Kenneth Blackwell's shenanigans, the roles of Diebold and Triad in the
Ohio election and the recounts requested by the Greens and Libertarians,
the hearings headed by Rep. John Conyers, Jr., and the suits filed by
the Rev. William Moss et al by Cliff Arnebeck of the Alliance for
Democracy.
Your 2002 Persons of the Years were the Whistleblowers: Cynthia Cooper of
Worldcom, Colleen Rowley of the FBI, and Sherron Watkins of Enron. I look
forward to seeing those of us who are pursuing the overturn of
the 2004 presidential election as the 2005 Persons of the Year.

would read any of this mainstream crap. I reject it outright as pure propaganda.

Everyone should cancel their subscriptions to magazines such as Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, etc. And send an email or a letter explaining exactly WHY.

Now THAT would send a strong message!!!

215. Wake the fuck up, guys. Influential people are not always good.
Edited on Fri Dec-24-04 01:01 PM by American Tragedy
It's naive and foolish to pretend otherwise.

As I said before, I personally thought it should have been Karl Rove. He managed a victory out of the worst and most vulnerable presidential candidate in modern history. Rove proved that one could win in America by appealing to the worst in human nature, which is a profound statement with terrible implications for the future.

Still, Bush plays a vital role in that, since those two constitute a symbiotic relationship, as the mask and the intellect of that political persona. It's a very justifiable choice, since he is the face that alternately inspires and repulses most of the American electorate.

If not him, then who? Nobody here yet has been able to come up with somebody who really had greater effect. Our view of the election was generally oriented around our fear and hatred of this man and the people who followed him, and now we have to face that unspeakable fear as he is a lameduck president for the next four years. I would think that DUers of all people would consider Bush to have greatest influence over our lives in the past year. Even if he is merely a puppet, he serves as a symbol of all the people who oppose everything in which we believe.
