Five Afghan prison guards and police and two prisoners have been killed in a jail break attempt by al-Qa'eda inmates at a prison in Kabul.

The interior ministry said that a shoot-out between security forces and two other prisoners was ongoing.

Prisoners may have planned to kill Idema, Bennett and Caraballo
The violence started in the same cell block where three American vigilantes are serving long jail terms for illegally detaining and torturing Afghans in a freelance war on terror.

Several police and prisoners were wounded in the ensuing siege of two prisoners who had fled from the block to a workshop inside the Soviet-era Pul-i-Charki prison compound on the outskirts of Kabul.

The prisoners killed by guards were Pakistani and Iraqi al Qa'eda members who had been arrested in Kabul by Afghan security forces, Abdul Salam Bakhshi, chief of the prison, said.
