Peter Ueberroth dropping out of Calif. recall race
LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth has decided to quit the recall race for California governor, state Republican sources told CNN Tuesday.
Ueberroth, a Republican who was reaching out for the support of independents in the 135-candidate contest but was trailing in the most recent polls in fourth place with just 5 percent voter support, plans to withdraw at a 4 p.m. ET news conference, the sources said.
He does not plan to endorese any of the majorcandidates just yet, but wants to discuss with them individually their ideas on creating jobs before making his choice, the sources said.

7. Figured he would but this won't really help Arnold much
and the MORE it looks like a REPUB MIGHT WIN the more I think Californians will reject the recall..this might actually help Davis.

Either way..he is still on the ballot and will get votes.

8. McClintock out next
If the Republicans do one step admirably, it's the lockstep.

9. That might be tough
because if his numbers go up from this, then he'll be more reluctant to exit stage left. He actually think he has a chance.

23. Or another Small Plane Crash
Though I think McLintock will get the first (warning) message, very likely nonlethal and nonpublicized...

Perhaps just a "locked-room-Hitler-style-harangue" for 8 hours with Uncle Karl.

10. Don't think he will
His numbers went up in the latest Field poll and he represents the died in the wool Republicans.

11. He's still on the ballot.
My sample ballot arrived yesterday, and no matter what he says, Ueberroth is still on the ballot and will still get votes, not many, probably, but it's just too late to simply withdraw.

14. What an embarrassment to Ueberroth.
At least he brought to the contest fiscal experience.

Arnie brings "I'll be back."

Can Peter remain a member of the GOP in good faith?

15. Not too significant.
We certainly should be prepared to defeat Schwarzenegger under a two person scenario. Ueberroth wasn't taking much from Arnie I don't think. He was billed as an independent. Some people won't be able to stomach Arnie and his antics. Ueberroth supporters may very well split up at this point, small in number though they are.

16. McClintock Is In!!!!!!
His numbers are up and he'll rally the Republican base to vote for him while other conservative luminaries such as David Drier, Chris Cox, and Ding Dong Duke Cunningham have supported anti-gun nut Arnie S!!!

19. You are right.
Lou Sheldon, "pro-family" forces, Gun Owners of America, radical anti-tax forces and others support McClintock. And not for no reason. I oppose Arnie, but he's a flaming communist compared to McClintock! And I honestly do believe a prospective Arnie governorship would destroy the state GOP.

21. Probably the fact that he was only polling at 5%
This guy was running because he wanted to be Governor. He wasn't running to sell books, sell porn, or inflate his ego. He saw that he wasn't going to win, so he dropped out.

22. This means less votes for the recall
Every time a Republican drops out, the support for the recall will drop.

A certain percentage of Ueberroth voters are not going to vote because he's out. He didn't have enough votes to make a big difference.

If McClintock drops out, it is very likely the recall will fail.
