Anti-Bush protesters in Halifax get designated site
HALIFAX -- There will be a site specifically set aside for protesters when United States President George W. Bush speaks in Halifax on Wednesday.

The spot will be opposite the front doors to the historic site at Pier 21, where Bush will speak.

Sergeant Don Spicer of Halifax Regional Police says demonstrators will be able to have their say.

However, he says anyone breaking the law will be arrested.

2. *Anyone*?
However, he says anyone breaking the law will be arrested.

So does this mean that Bush will be arrested too?!? ;)

Still, this is expected - I mean it's the same thing they did here during the conventions. Free speech zones by foot!

14. Well,...of course. They know how "unpopular",...
,...and loathed they are by decent, intelligent, COMPASSIONATE people and will avoid all reality which ruins their "image".

9. Ottawa prepares for anti-Bush protests
They're protesting everything from capitalism and corruption to criminality, and they're blaming it all on U.S. President George W. Bush. Thousands of activists are expected to march on the capital Tuesday, clogging streets and shouting complaints over all manner of perceived wrongs - imperialism, racism, elitism, torture, treaties and terrorism.

Another group, the People's Global Action Block, says that by inviting the "murderous" Bush to visit, Canada is "a willing ally to a terrorist regime and its imperial adventures." "There should be no mistake," said group spokesman Jeremy Bell. "Behind the rhetoric of 'peacekeeping,' Canada is involved in and profits from the occupations of Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and Haiti."

The group also opposes capitalism, imperialism, "corporate mercenaries and war profiteers." It's inviting activists to join its members in downtown Ottawa for a "Breakfast with Bush." The No to Bush Committee has produced posters urging people to "say no to Bush when Bush comes to shove." It is organizing the two main protests on Tuesday, a march at noon and a candlelight vigil on Parliament Hill at 5 p.m.

For most Ottawa residents, however, the Bush visit and the accompanying protests simply mean traffic and other logistical headaches. City officials are warning commuters to expect delays and shutdowns throughout the downtown core and its approaches.

11. Pier 21 is Canada's version of Ellis Island
Hundreds of thousands of hard-working, honest immigrants first landed at Pier 21 (including both my parents). It is now a historic site. I wish they could have picked somewhere else for Bush's visit - perhaps a fish gutting plant, where the presence of blood and death would have been more to his liking.

13. Immigrants
My Grandfather came through Halifax. i would love to travel there someday. My ancestors on the other side of the family were original land owners (after the Indians) of what is now Kennebunkport. Irks me that the Bush family squats there now.

15. I have been to Pier 21
It is an interesting place. They have an archives where you can find out information about relatives, if the data is available and has been cataloged. They have the landing records for most of the ships in the 1920's and 1930's I believe. There is also an internet site where you can try to look up this data - I forget the name, but you might find it by googling Canadian National Archives or something like that. Halifax is a lovely city. Well worth the visit if you can afford the time and money.

16. Thanks for the info
I can imagine it is really a beautiful area. My Grandpa arrived in 1924, so maybe his info would be in the archives. I found his immigration paper on microfilm that I borrowed from Canada through interlibrary loan. I will check that site right now, and see what they have!

17. I think I found the site
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/0201_e.html

Their imm. records start in 1925--1 year late, but as I said, I have the immigration paper. Found a nice map, though, of the area where he went to live (St Catherines).

19. If you have the microfilm records, you probably have all there is
The search engine I am thinking of had a subset of what was actually available on the microfilm. Glad you found something interesting, though.
