Western Shoshone challenge Bush empire
This is a stand I support!

Western Shoshone protest war
By Brenda Norrell Indian Country Today

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Western Shoshone Carrie Dann urged American Indians not to be a part of the slaughter of women and children in Iraq. Dann called on Native young people instead to rise to defend Native nations, as the Bush administration steamrolls America and Iraq for corporation gain.

''This government has treated indigenous people as the enemy and now they are fighting this war for them,'' Dann said, speaking at the Nahuacalli Indigenous Embassy in downtown Phoenix.

Dann said America's promise of democracy has never been fulfilled to Indian nations; their treaties were never honored.

''I have not seen democracy in action as far as indigenous people are concerned.''

3. that is correct, all Indian Nations are in America and so is Iraq....
which is another reason I was opposed to the invasion in the first place. We've obviously learned nothing good from our past in this country...

6. tk2kewl, thanks for that link. I had heard about Bush's missteps on this
but, man, watching the idiot in action explaining sovereignty when he invaded a sovereign nation like Iraq ...despicable!!!!

8. The "sovereignty" moment was, I believe, his absolute low point
in terms of using language to embarrass himself and the nation in public. Such a shame this kind of thing doesn't get any play in the mainstream media.

9. My favorite quote:
Dann said it is wrong for indigenous people to be involved with taking the lives of women and children in Iraq. ''It is not the indigenous belief to hurt women and children. I do not think we have a right to do this.''

It is not Christian either

19. Christian? Did someone say, Christian?
Bush doesn't know what the word means, because the word means: Christ-like.

Jesus Christ would never kill innocents, he would never wage a "war" in God's name or anyone elses.

This just /infuriates/ me when Bush calls himself a Christian, but I guess it's a free country and he can call himself anything he likes. I just know it's not true.

:grr:

4. They want to be REALLY pissed off, they should read Lynne Cheney's fiction
The heroine of _Sisters_ is supposed to have had a Shoshone grandmother named Deer Woman who winds up in a menage with two white trappers...

It's nice to see SOMEONE standing up to the Bush empire, and why shouldn't it be them? They know how this 'civilizing mission' crap works from way back.

10. You do that! Everyone needs to know how dirty this novel REALLY is
All the press has focused on the lesbian angle...the stuff about land use in Wyoming and the big ranchers vs. homesteaders is much dirtier, from my POV, and what she does with the Native American angle is pretty exploitative IMHO.

15. Call the tribe on the phone and ask
I suggest you google for the Blackfoot nation in both US and Canada, and get the phone numbers for the various bands. Then make some calls and ask.

Take it from an old reporter, you can learn a lot of information fast by working the phones. Just be polite, clear and patient.

Good luck. Meegwich, SH

13. sure ...
let me give you their website:

http://www.wsdp.org/

But you can call their office up at (775) 468-0230 and ask for Julie Fishal or Chris. There is a quite a story behind these two sisters who have fought the BLM and the mining corporations who are big Bush supporters....

Thanks!

14. heh...I'm not THAT blm.....
Mine is short for bushlovesmoonies. Moonies are a big part of Bush's constituency. Moon funded and fostered the whole far right policies of the fundamentalist movement in other religions over the last 4 decades.

16. The similarities between the railroad barons and the
oil/natural gas barons are striking.

Since the government's using college loan and grant money as incentive for young people to play their ugly game, we should set up and donate to a college fund program for kids who aren't wealthy enough to afford it.

17. I'd like to share a conversation I had with a Libertarian
We were discussing Measure 37, IIRC, the Oregon property rights measure.

He was going on and on about property rights, "Well, if it's my land I should be able to do what I want with it. I got here first, and so my new neighbors should just put up with it."

I said, "But it's not your land."

He said, "What do you mean it's not my land. I own it."

I said, "Speaking of being on land first, this is Nez Perce land. You claim property rights because you say you got here first. You didn't. You don't belong here. I don't belong here. It's not our land."

I would get up and move if everyone else would, but as it is, I just hold a rather eccentric point of view in my community, that this land actually belongs to the Nez Perce and it should all be given back to them; just let the government that stole it from them in the first place compensate us a bit to give us a fresh start somewhere else.

Not that there's anywhere we can go where we're not infringing on the rights of those who were first inhabitants of their land. It's maddening.

20. Straight Shooter, the Western Shoshone doesn't see it that way...
they don't care about the private land owners, it's the Federal Government that controls the "public lands" in Nevada, more than 80% of the state and the gov wants to let huge corporations make a profit off of it for mining, etc. for little fee and that land was only to be "used" according to the Treaty of Ruby Valley 1863 with the Western Shoshone and the guv. Now, they want the Shoshone to be off the table and out of the way on the management and use of their own land...
