Further north in Mosul, US forces have now found 50 bodies dumped in the streets in the past week,
mostly executed Iraqi policemen or National Guardsmen.
The deaths suggest the insurgency over the past three weeks has been far more deadly than the US military has admitted. At least 500 gunmen attacked police stations in Mosul earlier this month, looting and burning the buildings. Many police simply fled their jobs or joined the insurgents.
US commanders admit it could now take months to rebuild the force in Iraq's third largest city.As the US military struggles to rein in the insurgency, the number of detainees has doubled in two months to 8,300, most from operations in Falluja, Samarra, Mosul and north Babil province.
