Bush Calls on Americans to Volunteer, Give
Guardian
CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - President Bush issued a holiday-season call on Americans to volunteer and give to charity - ``to share our blessings with the least among us.'' He singled out for special praise those who have given time and energy to U.S. troops stationed around the world.

``The greatest challenges of our time have come to the men and women who protect our nation,'' Bush said in his weekly radio address Saturday.

``Like generations before them, today's armed forces have liberated captive peoples and shown compassion for the suffering and delivered hope to the oppressed,'' Bush said. ``In the past year, they have fought the terrorists abroad so that we do not have to face those enemies here at home.''

Bush said there was much to appreciate this Thanksgiving weekend. ``We're grateful for our beautiful country, and for the prosperity we enjoy. We're grateful for the chance to live, work and worship in freedom,'' Bush said.

ME? I'd like to give him a one way ticket to Guantanamo and life in jail for his entire administration.

16. When has he ever volunteered for anything?
I would like just one example where he has given his services to help anyone other than his big contributors and the time he had to because of his cocaine arrest.

It's just like Vietnam. He calls on other people to serve and volunteer, while he just indulges in wads of money and corruption.

Edit: For the sarcasm impaired - this post was dripping with it. Compassionate conservative, my ass. Covering his ass conservative is a little closer to the truth of the matter.

7. Compassion and suffering.. by blowing things up!
Like generations before them, today's armed forces have liberated captive peoples and shown compassion for the suffering and delivered hope to the oppressed,'' Bush said.

Errrm, well except for the thousands of Iraqi civilians that have been slaughtered by US bombs and endless assaults on their cities, but, yeah, I suppose. :-/

You know, it is a good idea to give back. In fact, I've been donating some of my money to Amnesty International to help prevent and investigate war crimes being committed by the US. :)

Bush said there was much to appreciate this Thanksgiving weekend. ``We're grateful for our beautiful country, and for the prosperity we enjoy. We're grateful for the chance to live, work and worship in freedom,'' Bush said.

Well, unless your gay, unemployed by the weak economy, or non-Christian at least.

As someone posted on another message board re Bushie's call to volunteer--maybe his daughters could volunteer for the military and serve in Iraq. You know, just to prove how grateful they are for all our freedoms and the freedom we're offering Iraqis, thanks to their Daddy.

11. Notice he calls on Americans
to give, not American corporations.
90% of all charititable contributions are already by individuals.
Coprorations are around 8%.

Since Shrub was "elected" our family has lost our income, our retirement money and our health insurance.
Why doesn't he ask Halliburton, ExxonMobil and Pfizer for some charity money and leave us alone?

PS. We still give to our favorite causes, even if it's only $20.

22. I refuse to cover for Bush's responsibilities...
and those responsibilities included programs that would take care of the less fortunate. So, on principle, Mr. Bush. Thank you, but no. Thank you. You lead by example. Restore programs to care for the elderly and the poor, tax those who can afford it, that would be your one way to share "our" blessings with "the last amongst us" ... but as long as you are a Robin HOod in reverse, robing the poor to give to the rich, I refuse on principle to volunteer or to give to charity.
You do it!

24. let him volunteer
If my work is so valuable to society, let me be paid for it. No way I am going to give away my labor and undercut myself and other workers even more. With my munificent annual income in the high 4 figures I'm cheating myself and those around me to work for nothing. I'm tired of the growing appetite for unpaid labor in this society, be it the brain-washed volunteers or the forced labor of prisoners. They are hurting people who need an income from their jobs.

Let the rich volunteer.

George, you could stop the pain with the stroke of a pen. That's all it would take. The pain you have caused is great. Gunshot wounds, severe trauma, loss of life. Somewhere a motherless and injured child is crying for your voluntary decision to stop your aggression. That is all it would take for the greatest change possible. All of our efforts have been in vain. We have done our part. Now it is your turn. Turn away from evil, George. Your god does not approve of your behavior. You volunteer. To stop.

37. Oh YEAH?
He should call on the wealthiest 1% to give back their tax cuts.
He should call on corporations to give back the government incentives to take jobs away from us.
He should call on corporations to PAY their fair share of income taxes by not allowing them to establish their addresses in Bermuda.

By the way, if you're in the mood to vomit, read David Brooks' "Good News on Poverty"
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/27/opinion/27brooks.html?hp

It's his usual "look at the bright side of this miserable administration's policies" type Op-Ed.

OK, I'm thankful for lots of things. I am thankful for all of the things that Prince Chimp has NOT YET done to us.

42. Bush taketh away, but he doesn't giveth ... at least not to the poor.
While Bush is giving our hard earned tax money to his rich friends and wealthy corporations, he pisses on the poor and middle class.

I've had it. Besides not having any money to spare anyway, I refuse to give anything to anyone. I've worked my ass off the last couple of years just to pay my taxes and to make it from month to month.

More than 59 Million Americans apparently give a shit about me, the poor and the needy, children, the environment, and America in general. I am tired of being stepped on and kicked around, and then being asked to pay for it. Stop whining ... you wanted 4 more years of wars, deficits, outsourcing, pollution, and poverty.

If you lost your job ... blame Bush voters
If you lost your health care ... blame Bush voters
If your school is underfunded ... blame Bush voters
If you lose your pension or Social Security ... blame Bush voters
If you can't pay for your prescription drugs ... blame Bush voters
If your kids can't afford college ... blame Bush voters
If your son/daughter is drafted and sent to war ... blame Bush voters

Americans had a choice between someone who has demonstrated to America that he is utterly incompetent, ignorant, and anti-poor/middle class and a Democrat who stood for hope, peace, and prosperity.

I am sorry if this offends some of my fellow DUers. I know that we liberals are not supposed to be like that. I've never felt like that. I was raised to care and give to those more needy than me. For right now, the humanitarian in me has ceased to exist, as has my hope for America's future. I hope that in time, this will change.

47. Bush is too busy giving to those who have plenty.
I'd find this appeal a little more convincing if Bush offered to give up his presidential salary (other wealthy public officials have done it, though I can only recall two Democrats right now). It would also help if he wasn't so keen on cutting taxes to those who have millions or billions -- and keen on cutting literacy programs and the like.

Just to recap, folks, you're expected to:

*save for retirement.

*save for your down payment on a house.

*save for your kids' education.

*save extra for a rainy day.

*save for your medical expenses.

*work full-time at a job that will pay all your expenses (no handouts for you unless you're wealthy). If rent eats up a huge part of your income or a house is unaffordable, that's just too bad.

*"love your children with all your heart," or at least that's what Bush says. We all know how well Barbara and Jenna turned out. :eyes:

*volunteer and donate money.

I have no idea when you're suposed to sleep.

Bush simply doesn't live on the same planet as the rest of us. Of that I am convinced. He was fine using the public's money for a baseball team and he's fine using our money for his salary (double what Clinton got, but at least Clinton worked for his).
