Two missiles fired at US military plane in Baghdad
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_365398,001300180038.htm

Two surface-to-air missiles were fired at a US military C-141 transport plane on Saturday as it was taking off from Baghdad airport but missed, a senior US defence official said.

The missiles were fired early in the day, hours before US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld departed from the airport at the end of a three-day visit, his aide Lawrence DiRita said.

27. Of course it was friendly fire
How could it have been anything else?

It was fired by friendly Iraqis who are, of course, grateful to the Americans for liberating them. The liberated Iraqi people are our friends, aren't they?

2. Yeah, everything is going really well (* and Rumsfeld lying).
Well, when you 69% of people think that SH was associated w/ 9/11 after hearing these thugs lie and lie again, what can I say?

I guess * is pretty desperate though to be speaking (lying) tomorrow night. I won't be watching...can't stomach it. :puke:

Just hope that he is called on all the lies that he will be spewing. I think the Dems are ready now.

3. Interesting
Alarming. But to be expected, since these sort of things happen with some regularity in war torn Africa.
I recall seeing a REPUBLICAN Congressman (of course!) on 'Politically Incorrect' saying that outfitting civilian aircraft with countermeasures would be too expensive to implement. In other words, he was adopting the 'wait and see' approach towards things. It seemed rather soulless at the time, and it alse seemed perfectly suited for the situation: He had Ann Coulter sitting next to him.

7. I found this quote...
"Baghdad is bustling with commerce. Universities and hospitals are open for business," Rumsfeld said. "A free press is flourishing, Iraqi banks have started taking applications for small business loans so Iraqi entrepreneurs can create jobs."

8. They Will Bag One Of These Transports, Sir
It is only a matter of time. Such large, slow targets as these machines during landing and take-off will not be missed indefinitely.

10. Bet we are not able to use too many helo's anymore either, Sir
This is going from really bad, to worse than anyone ever imagined. We were suckered into this tar pit. I don't care what anyone says. Saddam was not this smart. He had help. My guess is the Russians.

25. Don't underestimate someone
who fought their way to ruler of a country. It's only in 'civilised' (and stable) lands that such positions are given away to idiots; in the rougher parts of the world, you have to earn it yourself. Ask Arafat and Castro.

11. I have been wondering when we'd start to see SAMs.
I also wonder if they are being imported, but I don't
suppose we'll find out soon.

18. There Was A Discussion Here Recently, My Friends
Concerning poor security at a large number of former Iraqi Army munitions dumps: in one of these, a reporter claims to have found many Russian shoulder-fire anti-aircraft missiles still in their crates, that were not listed on any paper-work. It is sites like this the proposed Iraqi "puppet" forces are to be detailed to guard: importation should not be necessary.

22. Looks like the Hindutan Times reported this story 24 hours before...
...BBC, CNN, Reuters, and the rest did. What does that say about the media that so many put their faith in?

15. Riverbend is reporting a rumor that it was Rumsfeld's plane
I just heard some interesting news! Apparently as Rumsfeld's plane was leaving Baghdad Airport to take him to Kuwait, missiles were fired at his plane and they missed! Hoping to hear more about it- but I just had to share.

21. Reuters link-Missiles Miss U.S. Plane in Baghdad
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030907/wl_nm/iraq_plane_dc&cid=574&ncid=1473

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Unidentified assailants fired several missiles at a U.S. transport plane taking off from Baghdad but failed to hit it, a military spokeswoman said on Sunday.

"Multiple missiles were fired which missed the aircraft," the spokeswoman said.

The incident -- the third of its kind since May 1, when Washington declared an end to major combat in Iraq (news - web sites) after toppling Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) -- took place on Saturday morning.

It caused no injuries or damage to equipment.

It's really unbelievable if you think about it. The Iraq guerrillas almost killed the U.S. Sec. of Def.
