POLICE fired tear gas at demonstrators outside the US Embassy in Athens overnight as a Greek rally against the war in Iraq turned violent.Dozens of youths, wearing scarves and crash helmets, clashed with riot police and hurled rocks and bottles toward the embassy building. At least 25 people were detained, police said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
A downtown branch of the US bank Citibank was damaged in a firebomb attack, while protesters set fire to trash bins near the embassy. Two other Greek banks were also damaged.
The rioters, who also scuffled with rival groups of demonstrators, broke off from a peaceful protest by about 10,000 people.
More than 6000 police were deployed around the city and a helicopter circled overhead as the marchers gathered outside the embassy building which was barricaded by riot police buses.
Chanting "American killers", protesters carried empty white coffins daubed with red Arabic writing to voice their objection to the war in Iraq.
Demonstrators also unfurled a large banner which read "Hands off Fallujah", the central Iraqi city where US forces are battling Iraqi fighters.
