after the American Revolution we understood for a long time that political power should not be directly inherited, as it was with the monarchs and high nobility.

But we never managed to reach the next step in comprehension--that over time (and not all that much time even), inherited wealth beyond a certain point is equivalent to inherent rule in politics, so allowing obscene fortunes to accumulate and then get passed down without taxing them adequately is the same as allowing for royalty and high nobility, though it might take two or three generations for that to show up clearly enough for many people to see.
