To "go the way of the dinosaur" does not imply a lasting evolutionary effect.

Dinosaurs were not die as a result of lasting evolutionary effect. I believe the most widely accepted hypothesis is that the environment changed too rapidly for the majority of dinosaurs to adapt or evolve to accommodate the changes.

I think that was what was being said by "go the way of the dinosaurs".


Also, there is no way to be certain that the next generation would "snap back to its natural form". The effect of environment on genetic mutation is a demonstrable and sometimes unpredictable variable.
