31. The real perpetrators got away scott free, again.
Just like in Vietnam, Cambodia, El Salvador. They live like kings now. Meanwhile, scapegoats resign themselves to a meager existence. Even if those scapegoats are unflattering to witness. The following is from an interview Liddy England did with a German magazine last month. She comes across as both pathetic and a perfect definition of the banality of evil. She would have done anything, ANYTHING, 'they' told her to do. Just like tens of thousands of other soldiers would. She has no regret (except when prompted), other than getting caught. She blames the media for any deaths caused by exposure of the pictures, not herself. And most chillingly, she says there are things worse than what was released, although she doesn't talk specifically about rape.

The former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, called you and your colleagues the "rotten apples" of the military. Bush claimed to be ashamed of what you did.

Well, back then I thought: How can they say that when it was happening all over Iraq. The same thing is happening in Guantanamo now and other places. We knew that our officers knew about it and our sergeants.

(snip)...I felt bad about it, ... no, I felt pissed off. If the media hadn't exposed the pictures to that extent then thousands of lives would have been saved.

Did you do any water boarding?

No, I didn't. And I didn't witness it. But that doesn't mean it wasn't done. Because a lot of the time the interrogators would take the prisoners into the showers and close the doors and we would have to put like sheets or blankets up over the windows. We could hear what was going on but we couldn't see.

You heard screams?

Yeah. Sometimes.

Her current life involves paranoia, looking for jobs at places like Wal-Mart and Staples, and taking care of a son fathered by a fellow torturer (and adulterer, he cheated on Liddy with her good friend).
