40. Why is it we wait until a crisis mode hits?
We've suspected this problem since 2000, confirmed it in 2004, and another election is rolling around and we're still at the same game.

This is what the National Institute of Standards and Technology thinks about the situation (NIST-"Founded in 1901, NIST is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.")-

Paperless electronic voting machines 'cannot be made secure' according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In the most sweeping condemnation of voting machines issued by any federal agency, NIST echoes what critics have been saying all along, that due to the lack of verifiability, 'a single programmer could rig a major election.' Rather than adding printers, though, NIST endorses the hand-marked optical-scan system as the most reliable. -Dec, 2006

Democracy is so inconvenient, isn't it? Let's just say we have a democracy-it's so much easier than going about insuring one. Thank you Dennis, once again, for inconveniencing us.
