7. Congress needs to ask him about the granting of contracts by
the Department of Homeland Security. It also needs to ask about the setting of priorities in making grants to various regions of the country. I should think Chuck Shumer would be especially concerned about whether sufficient funds have been allocated to New York State and in particular New York City for anti-terrorism projects. And Senator Feinstein needs to ask Chertoff about how he has dealt with funding for anti-terrorism activities in the large urban areas in California. Same applies to Florida, Nevada, Texas, Illinois, Ohio and other states with internationally recognized large urban areas or strategic infrastructure that would be vulnerable to terrorism. Has Chertoff aided and abetted the Bush procedure of using federal grants to promote political ends? Did Rove make his political presentations in the Department of Homeland Security while Chertoff was in charge? These questions must be asked and answered truthfully and in a manner that elicits the Senate's confidence and trust. We need an honest man or woman in the Department of Justice, not one who has conducted business in a corrupt or partisan matter where Americans' lives are at stake.
