Got A Reply from Politco, re: GOP January Meeting Lie

I corrected the article at around 745 this morning. My mistake – and reporters do make honest mistakes from time to time – was assuming my recollection of the Baltimore meeting was correct. That assumption was buttressed by a GOP aide who has also misremembered the sequence of events.

What I remembered, incorrectly, was that Republican staffers felt ambushed by Obama’s late acceptance of their invite—what really happened was they were angry at his last-minute negotiations for the event to be televised.

The mistake wasn’t trivial but it doesn’t change the gist of the article: Republicans FELT burned and have nursed that grudge, even if it’s an irrational grudge. It is having a real impact on their willingness/reluctance to engage the president. It wasn’t an endorsement of their position, just a sentiment expressed to me in 8-10 interviews.

Thanks for the email.

Glenn Thrush

I'm no journalism expert, but isn't assuming and assumption a big no, no? I was told a long, long time ago by my boss, never assume anything.
