And Flash itself is buggy, doesn't always take full advantage of things like GPU acceleration, and does hog a lot of memory and bandwidth. Some things, like drawing lines and polygons, which could be done quickly and efficiently by passing instructions to the GPU instead of soft-rendering in the CPU, just aren't done in Flash - it picks the most compatible, yet most inefficient way to do things.

My impression is that it could be reimplemented/refactored in a far more efficient way, but Adobe doesn't feel like spending the time to do it.
