At least in the United States and Canada, back in 1990, polls showed that 86% of Americans identified themselves as Christian, that dropped to 77% in 2001. Its estimated that the amount of Christians in this nation drops by almost a percentage point every year. Even more interesting, the United States was always called a Protestant nation, being that most Americans were Protestant, well, between 2004 and 2006, that no longer is true. At the same time that Christianity is losing ground, those who don't follow organized religion at all has almost doubled, from 8% in 1990, to 14% in 2001. So what does this mean? If current trends continue, then by 2042, and perhaps sooner, Christianity will lose majority status in the United States, and just be another Minority Religion among many.

Now, the question is, will this be reflected in our federal government? I would say that I don't think so. The fact is that even when Christianity loses majority status, it will still be the largest minority in the nation, and remain overrepresented in Congress for years after the fact.
