...that's what you don't understand. It's Obama's responsibility (at least in part) to be a steward of the party which elected him.
If he and Pelosi and Reid simply push this through, they'll destroy the party.
There won't be a Democratic party to worry about and that's why he's backing off. If this is pushed through without a bipartisan majority, the right would probably throw a billion dollars or more at the 2010 and 2012 elections. You don't want that to happen. Trust me.
